Chapter 144

“Yes!” I shout, a sob of relief escaping me. ‘I did it! We did it, Wyndra!”

But my victory is short-lived.

Suddenly, my own chest starts to burn. It feels like someone just poured boiling lava into my veins. I collapse against the side of the bed, clutching my

heart.

‘Oh no,’ Wyndra moans in pain. ‘We’ve been infected. The remnants of the fire… it’s in us now.’

I let out a moan as pain thrashes through every part of my body. It feels like I’m burning from the inside out. My vision starts to swim. The room is spinning, and the edges of my sight are turning blue.

“Wyndra… help me… I can’t…”

‘Stay calm,’ she says, though her voice sounds weak. ‘We have to get out. Step outside. You need to stand directly under the moon. The moonlight will give us the strength to fight the venom. We need the moon now, Lyra!’

I have to sneak out. If the guards see me like this, they’ll know. I try to stand up even though my legs feel like they are made of water.

The moment I turn toward the door, I freeze.

King Geo is standing there. He must have entered silently. He isn’t looking at his son, he is looking at me. A slow, evil smile spreads across his face.

“I knew it,” he says in a low, terrifying voice. “I knew you weren’t just a normal wolfless girl. My son wouldn’t be attracted to something so useless. I suspect that there are layers to you. And I will peel every single one of them back until get the real you and then you will be mine forever.”

Terror strikes me. I try to run toward another direction, but the King is faster. He lunges across the room and grabs me by my hair. I scream, trying to struggle but he yanks me back and slams me into the stone wall with such force that the world turns black instantly.

When I open my eyes, I groan. The pain is worse than before. Everything is a blurry, dark blue smudge. That’s when I realize that the poison from the arrow is affecting my eyesight.

I try to stand up, but my body feels weak. I’m also cold. So cold. I blink several times and took around, trying to clear the fog, and realize I’m & a dark, damp cell. The air smells like rot and dirt.

“Wyndra?” I whisper. “Wyndra, are you there?”

Silence. I can feel her presence inside me, but she’s unconscious. She exhausted herself saving Kai.

“No, no, no, I mutter as tears gather in my eyes.

I try to move,

and that’s when I realize something is wrong. The cold air hits my skin in places it shouldn’t. I look down and gasp. I’m not wearing my gol dress anymore. I’m wearing nothing but my bra and panties.

‘Where are my clothes?! I cry out, my voice echoing in the cell. I rush over to a corner, trying to cover myself

“Well, I had my guards rip them off you,” a voice says from the shadows. A thief and a murderer should be stripped of everything. Even her dignity.”

king Gen-walks-into the cett. He looks down at me like Tm a piece of meat. He stops just a few feet away, his arms crossed over his chest.

“You will tell me who organized the attack on my son,” he says, his voice echoing with a terrifying authority. “I want names. I want to know who you are

alive.” working for. If you don’t speak, you will not leave this cell

“But… didn’t do it!” I sob, pulling my knees to my chest. “I saved him! Go check the healing room, he’s breathing!”
