Chapter 147
Kai
Pain is the first thing I feel. It’s white-hot sensation blooming in the center of my chest, making every breath feel like I’m inhaling broken glass. I force my eyes open. I’m in the palace’s healing room.
Then, my memories hit me like a blow. The blue arrow. The demon fire. Lyra.
“Lyra!” I shout, but my voice is extremely weak. I try to sit up, and the world tilts violently. “Lyra!”
A nurse rushes to my side, her hands pressing against my shoulders to keep me down. “Prince Kai, please, you must lie still. You were nearly-”
“Where the fuck is she?” I snarl, grabbing the nurse’s wrist. My grip is tight, fueled by adrenaline and terror. “Where is Lyra Diamond?”
“I don’t know, Your Highness! I-”
The door swings open and my mother rushes in. Her eyes are red-rimmed, and she throws her arms around me, sobbing. ‘Kai! Oh, thank the Goddess. We
thought you were gone.”
“Mother,” I say, pulling back enough to look her in the eye. “Where is Lyra? Tell me right now.”
Her expression hints at something like hesitation. “Well, your father… had her taken to a different wing for questioning. He thinks she was involved in the
attack.”
Panic immediately crawls up my spine. My father doesn’t question people, he breaks them.
“I want to see her. Immediately.”
“Kai, you’re too weak,” she pleads. “The healers said-”
I’m about to shift the blankets aside. I don’t care about the wound. I don’t care about the weakness. But before I can stand, the door opens again.
King Geo walks in.
The air in the room turns to ice. My mother stands up, sensing the shift in the atmosphere.
“Leave us, my queen.” Geo commands in a stern tone one would use for a child.
My mother looks at me, then at him, and slowly walks out, closing the door behind her. We are alone. I glare at
“You look better,” my father says. “The girl’s miracle’ worked, it seems.”
“Don’t fuck with me, father,” I growl. “Where is she? Where is Lyra?”
my hands fisting at my sides..
My father doesn’t answer. Instead, he slowly reaches into his pocket and pulls out his phone. He taps the screen and turns it toward me.
I freeze. My heart stops.
It’s a picture of Lyra. She’s in a dark, filthy cell. She’s stripped down to her underwear, huddled in a corner, looking small and terrified. The sight of her

vulnerable and shamed like that sets a fire in my blood that makes the demon fire feel like a candle.
I silently vow to myself right then.
I will kill him.
Even if it’s the last thing I do on this earth, I will end my father’s life.
“Let her go,” I say. My voice is a deadly, low vibration.
“I won’t,” Geo says. He tucks the phone away. “Not until you stop misbehaving. You will focus on your duties. You will focus on your chosen mate.
“If you don’t let her go,” I lean toward him, ignoring the stabbing pain in my chest, “I will make it my mission to destroy everything you have fucking built. This whole Lycan kingdom. I’ll burn it to the ground with you in it.”
Geo shakes his head, looking almost disappointed. “You’re already out of your mind for this damn girl. You’re weak, Kai.”
He steps closer, his eyes flashing with cruelty. “She is locked in a cell with electric keys. Absolutely no one but me can open that door. If you don’t agree to
my demands, I will leave her there. My man-monsters are already waiting. I’ll let them violate her body until there’s nothing left of her anymore.
“NO!” I roar, lunging at him.
He doesn’t move. He just pulls his phone out again and hits play on a video. I watch as two massive, naked predators enter Lyra’s cell. They are staring at her like she’s a meal. Lyra is backing into the corner, her eyes wide with terror that guts me.
“Fucking Stop it!” I yell so loud that my voice echoes off the stone walls.
I grab my father’s shoulders, feeling my claws beginning to break through my skin. I want to rip his head off. I want to see him bleed.
“I will kill you, father.”
Geo smiles. “Then my men will hide her body where
never find it. Decide, Kai. Her life, or your pride?”
I realize then that he will do it. He has no soul. He will let those monsters destroy her just to prove a point. I have to play his game. For now.
patch things up with Rina. I’ll do whatever you want. But give me the keys. Give me the keys to that cell and “Fine,” I spit, the words tasting like poison. “I’ll you never touch her again. You don’t even look at her. Ever.”

Geo’s smile widens. He pulls a small electronic device from his pocket. The key. “Make sure you avoid that wolfless girl from now on, or it will be worse than
this if I find out.”
He drops the key on the bed. I snatch it up and, without another word, I bolt.
I don’t wait for the healers. I don’t wait for my mother. I shift half-form, my speed increasing as I tear through the palace halls and down into the darkne of the dungeons. My heart is screaming in my ears. Please be okay. Please be okay.
I finally reach the iron door of the lowest cell. I jam the electronic key into the lock. The light turns green, and the door opens.
I freeze.
The smell of copper hits me first. Blood is smeared everywhere. On the walls, on the floor in thick, dark patches. I feel a wave of despair so strong that I
