The moment I see Kai standing in the doorway, the crushing weight in my chest finally lifts. He’s alive. He’s standing. He’s here.

I don’t think. I just move. I rush toward him and throw my asqus around him. I hug him as tight as i can, burying my face in his chest. I can smell the faint scent of the healing herbs mixed with his natural cedar scent, and it feels like home.

*Kai! Oh, thank the Goddess!” I sob, my voice muffled by his shirt. Tears stream down my face, hot and fast. I was so worried. I thought you were gone for real. I thought I’d lost you.”

I wait for his arms to wrap around me. I wait for him to stroke my hair and tell me he’s fine. But he stays perfectly still. He’s like a statue–cold, hard, and

unyielding.

I pull back slightly, looking up at him. His face is a mask of ice. He isn’t looking at me, he’s staring at the wall behind me, his jaw clenched so tight I can

see the muscle pulsing.

“Kai?” I whisper, my heart starting to sink. “What’s wrong? Are you in pain? Did I hurt you when I hugged you?”

I reach up to touch his shoulders with trembling fingers. I just want to make sure he’s really okay. But before my fingers can even graze the fabric of his

shirt, he shoves me away.

It isn’t a gentle push. He shoves me so hard that I stumble backward, my feet sliding on the uneven floor. I nearly fall into the pool of blood behind me. My

eyes are wide with shock and confusion as I look at him.

The look in his eyes is pure fury. It’s a dark hatred that makes my blood run cold.

“Kai… what is it?”

“You’re the reason I almost died,” he says. His voice is low, biting, and filled with a venom that hurts worse than Rina’s claws.

I freeze. I can’t believe what I’m hearing.

“You too? Do you really believe your father? Do you really think I caused a rogue demon to shoot an arrow at us?”

Kai doesn’t answer. He looks away, his nostrils flaring.

“Look at me!” I yell, stepping forward and grabbing his face with both hands. I force him to look at me. “Do you really believe I would purposely endanger your life? After everything? I literally reached into your chest to pull that poison out! I almost died saving you!”

Kai reaches up and rips my hands off his face. His grip is bruising.

‘It was a huge mistake to bring you here,” he says, his voice flat. “I should have known better. A worthless slave has no business being at the palace. You’re a

jinx, Lyra. A curse.”

The words hit me like a physical blow to the stomach. it would have been better if he had just slapped me. At least then the pain would be on the outside.

My throat tightens, and tears burn the backs of my eyes, but I refuse to let them fall. Not again. Not in front of him.

“Your father just attacked me, Kai!‘ I shout, my voice cracking. “I saved you from dying! I almost got taped to death by those… those animals on the floor!

Kai doesn’t say anything. He just stands there, staring at me with those cold green eyes. The silence is deafening.

“Damon will be here soon,” Kai says finally. He’ll take you back to the academy.”

He turns to leave. He’s actually going to just walk away and leave me in this cell.

“Is that it?‘ I grab his arm, stopping him. “So now you’re back to treating me like trash? Why do you do this every time, Kai? One moment I think we’re good, that we finally understand each other, and the next you look at me like I disgust you.”

Kai freezes. He doesn’t look back at me, but I can see his shoulders shaking.
