Lyra

As King Gee steps forward, the murmurs of the students die out instantly. It’s like someone sucked the oxygen out of the space. Everyone bows to the king’s presence.

Suddenly, Kai lets go of my shoulder. He doesn’t just release me, he pulls away as if my skin has suddenly turned into fire. I look at him in confusion. Only minutes ago, he was holding me to his chest, shielding me from the fire as if he couldn’t bear for anything to hurt me. Now, the wall is back up and it’s higher and thicker than before.

I can feel the shift in him immediately. The protective man who carried me out of the flames has vanished, replaced by the rigid, distant Prince. Without a word to me, he turns and walks away. I watch him move toward Rina.

She doesn’t hesitate as she throws herself at him, wrapping her arms tightly around his neck. She’s sobbing, her face buried in his chest. I stand there, feeling strangely hollow, as I watch him touch her face gently. His fingers, which were just touching my burnt shoulder with such care, are now cradling her

jaw.

“I’m fine, baby,” he says. His voice is loud enough for everyone to hear.

Then, he leans down and kisses her. It’s soft, lingering, and perfect for couples that are in love.

I have to look away as I feel a sharp, stabbing pain in my chest that has nothing to do with the burns on my skin. It’s ridiculous. I know who he is. I know he belongs to her. I’ve known that from the start. So why does it feel like a knife is being twisted in my gut?

Why do I feel betrayed when I was never his to begin with?

‘You know why.‘ Wyndra’s voice echoes in my head, sounding annoyingly knowing. ‘You can lie to your brain, but you can’t lie to the fox. You felt the bond in that fire. You felt the truth but you keep running from it.‘

I ignore her. I don’t have the energy to figure out if she’s truly my friend or just trying to torture me with things I can’t have.

My thoughts are cut off as Amara and Isolde finally reach me. They both look like they’ve been through a war, covered in burns and shivering, but they immediately wrap their arms around me, holding me upright.

“Goddess, Lyra, you’re shaking,” Amara whispers, her voice thick with worry.

I don’t answer. I’m too busy watching King Geo. He hasn’t stopped staring at me. It isn’t a look of concern for a student who was nearly roasted alive, it’s the look you give a pest you want to crush under your boot.

After what feels like an eternity, the King turns his back on me and addresses the crowd.

“Listen to me! his voice booms without any kind of speaker and I know he’s talking with his Lycan’s voice. “Worry not my dear students of Krypton! The rogue invasion has been contained. Our warriors have driven the filth back into the shadows where they belong.”

Sighs of relief instantly goes through the crowd.

“Most importantly, King Geo continues, gesturing grandly toward Kai and Rina, every student from the dorms was saved from the fire by the heroic actions of Prince Kai and his mate, Princess Katarina! They risked everything to ensure no life was lost tonight. Let us cheer for them!”

The courtyard erupts in applause. Everyone looks happy and excited that the chaos is finally over. Everyone except me-

“What the fuck?” Isolde hisses, her tes snapping toward the King. “Rina wasn’t even anywhere near the building! She was standing on the balcony watching it burn while you were inside dragging people out! You were the one saving people, not her!”

“Isolde, keep your voice down! I whisper, grabbing her arm. I glance nervously at the guards. “What if the King hears you?”

**But she’s right!“* Wyndra growls angrily. ‘How could this stupid Lycan King just give your credit to that lazy princess? And Kai is just standing there? He’s going to let his father lie to everyone’s face?‘
