The Lycan Prince’s Wolfless Slave (Academy Romance) novel Chapter 162

Chapter 162

“Would you have really left without saying goodbye to me?” she demands, pulling back to glare at me.

I flush, feeling shy. “I’m sorry, Kara. Everything happened so fast.”

“I’m just teasing,” she says, her expression softening. She grabs my hands and squeezes them. “Take care of yourself, okay? Don’t let Valeria idiots get to you. You’re better than all of them.”

“I’ll try,” I say.

As Kara turns to follow Roman, my gaze involuntarily drifts toward the sleek, black royal car, and I see him.

Kai is standing by the open door, his back to me. But as if he can feel my eyes on him, he turns around.

The distance between us is wide, yet the intensity of his look makes me feel like he’s right in front of me. His green eyes are dark, swirling with that some unreadable motion. For a long moment, we just stare at each other across the crowded lot.

Then, I hear it. His voice, clear and confident, echoing inside my own head.

‘You’ll always be mine, Diamond.’

I gasp, my hand flying to my chest in shock. My heart triple-beats against my ribs. I look at him with my mouth hanging open.

Did I just imagine that? Or did he just…

Kai doesn’t move, but a slow, wicked smirk spreads across his face. He’s watching my reaction with a dark kind of satisfaction. He knows. He knows what he just did.

Mindlink. The realization makes my head spin. Mindlinking is supposed to be for pack members, or… or mates. It shouldn’t be possible,

and yet…

How did he get into my head? How did he bypass every wall I have?

“Lyra? Earth to Lyra?” Amara nudges me, her eyes darting between me and Kai. “What just happened? What is going on between the two

of you?”

“Nothing!” I stutter too quickly, my face heating up until I’m sure I’m glowing red. “What do you mean? Nothing is going on.

Amara giggles. “Oh, please. You two were just eating each other up silently. You looked like you were having a whale conversation with just your eyes. And you just jumped like you saw a ghost.”

“It was nothing!” I defend myself, trying to look anywhere but at the royal car. He was just… staring. He’s a jerk, remember? He’s Rina’s

mate.I’m with Roman! Shut up, both of you!”

Isolde and Amara both burst out laughing, and for a moment, we all forget that we’re leaving each other soon.

“Up next, the Blackwell pack, the Doomshade pack and the Valeria pack, Board now!”

The driver’s voice booms over the crowd. This is it. My chest tightens again. I give my friends one final wave, and then I turn toward the

bus.

As I climb the steps, the first people I see are sitting in the middle row. My sister Daisy, is leaning back, her legs crossed. The moment our eyes clash, a wicked, triumphant smile spreads on her face. Beside her, our brother Jackson is staring out the window. He doesn’t say a word, but his expression is cold and distant.

“Hello dear sister, it’s a long way home. Why don’t you come sit beside me?” She taunts, grinning at me. I don’t even bother to give her a reply. I keep my head straight and walk past them, picking a seat at the back of the bus, as far away from my family as possible.

As the bus rumbles to life and pulls away from the academy, I press my head against the window. I try to control the tears, but a few drops escape as I think of what awaits me when I get home.

‘Don’t cry, little fox,’ Wyndra’s voice is a comforting purr in my mind. ‘We’ll be back. And hey, at least you have Roman who will check up on you at time, right?’

I wipe my eyes and sniffle. ‘You don’t even like Roman, Wyndra.’

‘Not…really..’she admits, and I can practically feel her rolling her eyes. ‘Something about him I don’t like. Maybe…he just doesn’t have enough bite. Now, that other one? He’s got bite!’

‘Of course you’d like the toxic one maybe because you’re toxic yourself! Kai is a monster!’

“Sometimes, Lyra, you need a monster to fight other monsters.”

‘I don’t want to talk about this, okay?’

I reach into my bag and pull out one of my romance novels. I need an escape. I need to be in a world where the problems are solved in three hundred pages and everyone gets a happy ending. I open the book and start to read, letting the words drown out the sound of Daisy’s taunting voice from a few rows ahead.

I don’t know how many hours have passed as the bus travels through the roads until we start approaching the Valeria territory. The air feels colder already.

Finally, the bus slows down. The brakes hiss as we pull into the familiar gates of the Valeria pack house. My stomach ties itselfi million knots. I look out the window and see the building, the training grounds where I spent so many miserable years, and the front porch where my parents are likely waiting.
