Chapter 163
Lyra

I step off the bus, and the familiar scent of the Valeria pack lands hits my nostrils, making me sniffle. It’s a mix of pine, damp earth, and something I’ve always associated with fear. As I take one step after the other, my stomach starts to twist into a knot. I really wish I didn’
have to come back here.
The memories come rushing back before I can even take a full breath. I remember being pushed into the dirt, being called a “wolfless and useless mutt, and spending nights scrubbing floors while the rest of my family sat together and ate with each other. My heart starts to race, and for a second, I feel like that scared little girl again.
No. I stop and take a deep breath.
I’m not that girl anymore. I’m stronger now. The academy has shaped me, hardened me, and taught me that the only person who will ever truly look out for me is myself and Wyndra. I have a mind of my own now. I’ve fought wolves and survived Lycans. I’ve survived a palace prison and a burning building. I will not let myself be bullied by Alpha Rafa or Luna Sarah. I’ll greet them, keep it brief, and then disappear into my tiny room. I just need to stay in my own bubble until this break is over.
“Welcome back to your personal hell, dear sissy.”
Daisy’s voice comes from behind me, dripping with mock sweetness. I don’t jump. I just turn around slowly. She’s standing there with her arms crossed, her eyes scanning me with a mix of excitement and pure hatred.
“I can’t wait to make you pay for how you talked back to me at the academy,” she says, stepping closer. “There are no princes here to hide behind, Lyra. No one is coming to save you.”
Before I went to the academy, a threat like that would have left me trembling. Now? I don’t feel anything but a sense of boredom. I stare at her, my expression flat and unimpressed.
“You know what I think? I think you sound desperate, Daisy.” I say calmly. “Is my attention really that important to you? It’s kind of pathetic how much you’ve been thinking about me that you couldn’t wait to talk at me the moment we got back.”
I see her face begin to redden. Her eyes widen in shock at my tone.
“You should better drink some water to cool off,” I add with a small, sharp smile. “You look like you’re about to have a stroke.”
I turn to walk away since I’m done with the conversation. But I only get two steps before I feel a hand wrap around my ponytail. She yanks it with such sudden, violent force that my head snaps back. A yelp of pain escapes me as I fall backward.
“You think you’re something special now huh?” Daisy screams, dragging me by my hair around like she wants to tear it out of my scalp. ‘T’ll make you fucking pay! I’ll show you who the Alpha’s daughter is!”
“Let me go!” I yell, reaching up to try and pry her fingers loose. The pain in my scalp is blinding. “Daisy, let go!”

Chapter 163
*Stop it! Let her go, Daisy!”
Suddenly, the pressure on my head vanishes. I scramble away, gasping for air, and look up to see Jackson standing between us. He has a
firm grip on Daisy’s wrist, pulling her hand away from me.
“Fucking stop this, Day!” Jackson snaps, his voice deep and commanding. “We all just arrived, and you’re already causing trouble? Have
you no shame?”
“She was insulting me, Jacks!” Daisy yells, trying to pull her arm back. “She called me pathetic!”
“Because you are being cruel,” Jackson defends me, his eyes narrowing at our sister. “Stop being mean all the time. It’s exhausting, Daisy. If she didn’t say anything to you first, why don’t you just leave her alone?”
I stare at my brother in surprise. Is Jackson really defending me?
He and I used to be close when we were younger. He was the one person who would defend me when a pack member or our parents went too far. But that all stopped years ago when Luna Sarah warned him that talking to me would get him punished because I was deemed weak. To see him standing up for me again… it feels like a ghost from the past has come back to life.
