Chapter 189
Lyra
“Was that your fox who just responded to me?”
The voice doesn’t sound like a roaring monster anymore. It is Kai’s voice. It is clear, smooth, and distinct, echoing right from the chest of the massive beast
holding me. It is absolutely mind–blowing. I’m cradled in the arms of a giant, terrifying predator, yet the man inside is speaking to me as if we are
completely alone in a quiet room. Two entirely different beings are sharing one single body, and right now, both of them have their focus entirely on me.
I swallow hard, my heart hammering against my ribs. “Um… yes. That was her.”
The massive Lycan beast tilts his head, his glowing red eyes tracking the movement of my throat. I can feel the vibration in his chest when he speaks again.
“What’s her name?”
“Wyndra,” I whisper, my fingers tightening in his thick fur.
A low, rumbling sound comes from deep within his throat. It isn’t a threat; it sounds almost like a purr. “Wyndra,” Kai repeats, his human voice laced with a
hint of warmth. “Somehow, I knew your fox’s name would be just as special as you are.”
Before I can even process the compliment, the beast’s consciousness surges forward again. The shadows around his face seem to deepen, and his jaw sets.
“Okay,” Vlad’s rough, beastly voice rumbles, vibrating through my entire skeletal structure. “Hold on tight, fox.”
I don’t need to be told twic
. I close my eyes as tight as I can, bury my face into the thick, dark fur of his shoulder, and hold my breath.
The next second, the world becomes a blur of pure kinetic energy.
Vlad launches forward. The speed is unlike anything I have ever experienced/It is completely different from riding in a car or even running in my fox form.
Trees whip past us like ghosts. The wind howls in my ears, tearing at my clothes and my hair with a fierce, wild strength. It is completely exhilarating, but it
is also terrifying.
The sheer force of the movement makes my stomach drop over and over again. My head is already spinning from the lingering after effects of the Wolmonite
drug, and the hyper–speed isn’t helping. The world tilts, and the rushing sound of the wind starts to fade into a dull buzz. I grip his fur even harder, squeezing my eyes shut, feeling like I’m on the brink of passing out.
“Stay awake, Lyra,” Wyndra urges in my mind. “We are almost there. Trust him.”
Thankfully, just as the blackness threatens to take over, the violent inotion stops. Vlad comes to a halt, his huge paws digging into the ground.
I slowly blink my eyes open, gasping for air as the wind stops slapping my face. I look around, and the breath catches in my throat for an entirely different
reason.
I know this place.
It is my precious haven. The private oasis.
I look at the scenery as a sudden rush of tears sting the backs of my eyes. This is the secret sanctuary I discovered years ago. It is the place I used to run to as an escape anytime life at the pack house got too unbearable to handle. Whenever the Luna punished me, whenever Daisy played her cruel tricks, or
whenever my pack members bullied me for no reason, I came here. This was the only place in the entire world that ever served me true peave.

And, by some twisted stroke of coincidence, it was also Rai’s place. The first time I met this fearsome Lycan Prince.
