Chapter 202

Lyra

To be honest, I’m kind of grateful that Kai saved me. I am still alive because he dragged me into the forest. And he brought these people together so I could feel better and safe. It’s a good thing, but it still doesn’t change the fact that he forcefully did it.

He didn’t ask. He just decided. I hate that he thinks it’s his right to make me do whatever he wants me to do. We should have been past that by now.

I made a big pot of pasta for everyone, Kara announces. Her voice is bright and cheerful, as if she can sense the weird energy and wants to make everyone

smile.

Damon chuckles and rubs his stomach. Only one pot, Princess? I’m going to need at least three plates if I’m going to survive the night.

Kara rolls her eyes. In your dreams, Dame. Lyra gets served first, and then we’ll see if there’s a crumb left for the rest of you gluttons.

She grabs my hands and begins to lead me toward the kitchen. I go, not because I want to, but because the alternative is standing there staring at Kai, and 1 am fairly certain that if I keep looking at him, I’m going to snap.

The kitchen is massive, an open space with exposed beams and stone walls that look like they were pulled from a fairytale, It’s beautiful, and it feels completely out of place in my current life.

This placeI start, trailing off as I look at the custom island. It’s stunning.

Kara leans against the counter, her expression softening. It is, isn’t it? Kai built this place from scratch about a year ago. I didn’t even know it existed. He kept it hidden from everyone. I thought it was his secret bachelor pad, he never allowed anyone hereuntil you.

I look away as I feel my cheeks heating up. I don’t want to think about why he built it. I want to focus on my anger.

I know you’re still furious,Kara says, her voice dropping to a low murmur. She reaches out to touch my arm, but I pull back slightly. He kidnapped you, in a way. You feel trapped.

He did kidnap me, Kara, I snap, though the bite is out of my voice. I’m just tired. I was a person with a choice. He drugged me. He made the choice for me. Do you know how many times people have taken my choice away? How many times I’ve been passed around like an object?

Kara sighs, leaning her head back. Lyra, I’m sure he didn’t want to do it. The Kai I know? He only did that because he was terrified. You don’t see him when you aren’t around, Lyra. You don’t see the pressure our father puts on him. The King isrelentless.

And that makes it okay?I challenge her, my voice rising. What happens next time? What happens when the King threatens him again? If the King demands he deliver me, will Kai choose his duty over me? Because if he’s already willing to drug me to save me, where does the line get drawn?

Kara opens her mouth to respond, but someone else cuts her to it.

I would rather kill every being in the whole world than touch you, flower.

1 Ireeze. My body goes rigid, the breath catching in my throat. I don’t need to turn around to know he’s there. The air in the room shifts, becoming heavy, charged with hus presence.

Kara turns, and a mischievous, excited glint enters her eyes. She looks at her brother, then at me. Including me, brother? That’s a bit harsh.

Ve sister, Including you, Kai says. His tune is cold and flat, almost like he isn’t joking. Can I talk to Lyra alone for a few minutes?

I want to scream at Kara to stay. I want to tell her that leaving me here with him is a death sentence for my resolve, But she just flashes me a sympathetic look, pats my shoulder, and slips past Kai without a word.

Traitor.

I’m left alone in the vast kitchen with him. He walks forward silently. My gaze uncontrollably notices his appearance. I stare at his black shirt that clings to his frame and sweatpants that hang dangerously low on his hips. Fean’t help but stare at the bulge in his pants. Dickprint. Shit.

Eyes up here, Miss, Kai jokes, but his voice is raspy, lacking its usual bite.

The heat floods my face, and I force myself to look up, meeting his dark, intense gaze.

I swallow hard, feeling the familiar, infuriating pull of attraction fighting against the icy wall of pay anger. No.
