Chapter 206
Lyra
As soon as Kai storms out, I let out a long, shaky breath, my lungs finally expanding. My hands are still trembling, so I tuck them under
my arms to hide it.

You guys, don’t mind Prince Kai,” I say, my voice softer than I intended. I turn to my friends, feeling the weight of their gazes. “Please. I just… I need things to be normal. I need you to not treat me like I’m made of glass or like I’m some kind of monster now that you know.”
Kara steps forward, her expression unreadable. She doesn’t look angry, but she looks deeply wounded. “I’m hurt, Lyra. Truly. Not because. you’re a fox. I genuinely don’t care if you’re a fox, a wolf, or a bird. I’m hurt because you didn’t trust me enough to tell me. I thought you were happy with our friendship.”
I feel a sharp sting of guilt in my chest. She’s right. I’m sorry, Kara. I really am. It wasn’t about not trusting you. It was about… it was about not truly knowing what I am and if it’s dangerous. If people don’t know, they can’t use it against me. But I know that’s a shitty
excuse.
Kara’s face softens, and she smiles tiredly. She reaches out and pulls me into a hug, her grip firm and reassuring. “Just promise me one thing. No more secrets. If something is happening, tell us. We can handle it.”
Amara and Isolde chime in, squeezing into the hug. “The princess is right, Amara says, her eyes watery. “We don’t care what you are, Lyra. We care about you. You’re our friend. You’re our sister.”
I bury my face in Kara’s shoulder, fighting back tears. “I promise. No more secrets.”
As we pull apart, I catch movement out of the corner of my eye. Roman is standing there, watching us, his jaw set and his eyes burning with a strange expression. He doesn’t join the group hug. He just stares at me.
He takes a step forward, his voice low. “Lyra. Can we talk? In private?”
I’m taken aback by his tone, He sounds almost… angry. But I nod. “Okay.”
1 follow him toward the kitchen. It’s quiet in there. Roman turns to face me as soon as we’re behind the wall. He looks disheveled, his hands clenched at his sides.
“What’s wrong, Romun? I ask, suddenly feeling anxious. I hope nothing is wrong with him.
We stand in silence for a moment. He just looks at me as the silence stretches on, becoming suffocating.
Then, he speaks. “What makes him better than me?”
My bath stalls. “What are you talking about?”

He takes a menacing step closer. He doesn’t look like the Roman I know. His eyes are wide and furious. “What makes him better than me,
Lyra? Tell me! Is It because he’s the Crown Prince? Is that it? Or do you just think I’m weak? Do you think I’m undeserving of you?”
“What do you- I don’t–Roman, stop,” I stutter, backing away until my hips hit the edge of the kitchen table. I don’t understand what
you’re saying.”
He doesn’t stop. He reaches out and grabs my shoulders, shaking me with enough force that my teeth rattle. “Why don’t you trust me, but you trust him? You don’t fucking trust me, but you trust the man who was once your oppressor? Why! Why didn’t you tell me who you are? 1 kept asking, and you kept lying to my face, claiming you were wolfless!”
“But… I am wolfless…” I manage to gasp out.
“Don’t!” he yells, making me jump. I’ve never, ever heard Roman yell like this. It scares me more than it should. “Don’t you dare lie to me
again!”
I try to calm him down, placing my hands on his arms. “Roman, please, listen to me. Kai only knows because he was the one who saw me during my wolf assessment test. He was there when it happened. I didn’t tell anyone, not even him, not at first. He just saw it.”
Roman scoffs, letting go of me like I’m burning him. He paces the small space, running his hands through his hair. “That’s not the point. You could have told me. You could have let me in. Instead, you made me feel like I don’t matter. Like I’m just some background character
in your life.
