Chapter 207
He laughs, a bitter, hollow sound. “You don’t need to lie anymore, Lyra. I see it. I see the way you look at him. I see the way you defend
him. You’re in love with him. It will never be me, will it?”
My heart stops. I stare at him, unsure of what to say.
“What? No. No, I’m not!
He turns to me, his eyes darting to my neck. He leans in closer, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. ‘Is that why you have hickeys all
over your neck? Because you’re not in love with him?”
I freeze. My hand flies to my throat, covering the marks I had no idea were even there. I remember Kai kissing every part of my body in the oasis but I don’t remember him giving me hickeys. My face feels like it’s on fire. How could I be so stupid? I didn’t even check in a
mirror.
“Roman…
“Do you have any idea what I risked to get here?” he asks, his voice trembling. “Do you have any idea that there are demons crawling everywhere outside, hunting for you? I risked my life to come here. I would do anything for you. And I come here, hoping, only to find out you’ve been getting fucked by him—”
“Don’t!” I raise my hand with a yell, unable to take in his words. I’m so angry, so hurt, that my own voice surprises me. Don’t you dare speak to me like that! You can be jealous, you can be upset, you can be angry at me for lying, but don’t you dare insult or belittle me like I’m some cheap object! I am not property, Roman!”
He stares at me, stunned. The rage in his eyes fades, replaced by a look of heartbreak. Tears prick at my eyes, but I force them back. I will not cry, Not here.
He lets out a long, tagged sigh and nods slowly. “You’re right. That was out of line. That’s not me, I’m sorry, Lyra. He looks down at his boots, looking smaller than I’ve ever seen him. “You know what? It’s best I leave. I can’t be here. Not like this. Don’t worry, your secret is safe with me. I won’t tell a soul. Bye, Lyra.
He turns to walk away, his shoulders slumped.
He’s going to leave? He’s going to walk out into the woods, into the middle of a demon hunting party? Panic sets in
“Romim, wait!” I grab his arm, pulling him back
He stops but doesn’t turn around.

Chapter 207
You’ll never trust me, and you’ll never see me as important. I’m done, Lyra.”
He tries to pull his arm free, but I hold on tight. I don’t want him to die or get hurt. I can’t have his death on my conscience, too. I
already lost my uncle. I can’t lose him too.
“Please,” I beg, my voice cracking. Please don’t go. I don’t want you to get hurt. Just… stay. We can talk about this.”
He finally turns to face me. He looks tired, so incredibly tired. “Why? Why should I stay, Lyra?”
I open my mouth, but no sound comes out. I’m speechless. What do I say? Stay because I don’t want you to die? Stay because I feel
guilty?
He waits. He stares at me, his eyes searching my face for something, anything.
“Because I care about you,” I whisper. “I really do.
He moves closer, invading my space. He’s right there, his warmth radiating off him. “Prove it,” he says softly. “Kiss me,”
I take a sharp breath. “Roman… I…”
“If you can’t prove it, then there’s no point,” he says, his voice devoid of hope. “I’ll leave. I don’t care if I die. I’m already dead inside, Lyra. You caused this. So? What’s it going to be?”
We stare at each other for a full minute.
He turns to walk away again. I see his back, the tension in his spine, and I know he means it. He’s going to walk out that door, and he’s going to get killed, and it will be my fault.
I reach out and drag him back.
He doesn’t fight me this time. I look up at him, the tears finally spilling over, streaming down my face. I don’t care about the consequences. I don’t care about the morality of it. I just want him to stay.
I lean in and kiss him.
It’s a desperate kiss. He grabs my waist, pulling me hard against him, and deepens it, his hands shaking. I feel upset, I feel guilty, and J. feel terrified, but I don’t pull away. I let him hold me. I let him kiss me, hoping this is enough to keep him safe
Just as the world is closing in, the kitchen door swings open.
I hear the sound of the door opening, I freeze, my heart stopping in my chest. I pull away from Roman, my breath cut short as lookin

He’s not yelling. He’s not roaring. He’s not lunging for Roman’s throat.
He’s just standing there, looking at us.
His eyes aren’t filled with fury. They’re filled with a raw, shattered kind of pain. It’s an agony so intense that I can feel it in my ow
chest, a heavy, sinking weight that makes it hard to breathe.
