“It doesn’t matter why you did it, Lyra,” I say softly, the words cutting through the air like winter frost. “The point is, you always find a
reason to push me away. You always find a way to make me the villain while you run to someone else.”
“Kai, that’s not-
“I am done,” I interrupt her, my voice unwavering. “I am completely done chasing you, Lyra. You want your space? You want to be your
own person? Fine. Have it. I won’t force myself into your life anymore. I won’t play the master, and I won’t play the possessive maye.
From this moment on, you are just a guest in this house.”
Lyra freezes, her mouth falling open slightly. The tears continue to stream down her face, and it makes my heart tighten, but I stay still. She looks completely stunned, as if she never expected me to actually give up
I turn my back on her, ready to walk out of the room to find Damon. I need a drink, and I need to figure out how to keep her alive without losing my mind in the process.
But before I can take a single step toward the door, a sudden, high–pitched sound cuts through the silence of the house.
Beep Beep Beep..
The loud electronic chiming echoes from the security panel on the wall near the doorway. A bright red light begins to flash repeatedly. I freeze in my tracks, my muscles instantly locking up. My heart drops into my stomach. Fuck no.
“What is that?” Lyra asks, her voice trembling as she looks up at the flashing red light. ‘Kai, what’s happening?”
I rush over to the panel, looking at the digital screen as I pull up the perimeter diagnostics. My eyes scan the screen, and a cold dread
washes over me.
“There’s been a breach, I growl, my Lycan instincts instantly roaring to life. The emotional pain from seconds ago is forgotten. We’re in
trouble right now.
“A breach? Lyra repeats, stepping closer to me. “How? I thought this place was completely hidden from the outside world.”
“It is, I say, my voice tight as I turn to face her. “The cloaking wards are tied to the main perimeter. The only way the wards drop is i someone physically opens the main entrance door from the inside without resetting the security seal. Doing that breaks the magical barrier briefly, long enough for any nearby demon scouts to find our exact location. Fuck!”
I gray her by the shoulders, pulling her with me. Someone opened the front door. The demons know actly where we are now
Ita’s eyes widen in horrige. “Oh no. –

“Listen to me very carefully, I command, staring directly into her eyes. “Do not dare leave this room. Do you understand mr? Lock the door behind me and stay put.”
Without waiting for her to answer, I rip the door open and sprint out of the study.
I race down the long hallway and fly down the winding stairs three steps at a time. The living room is in chaos. Kara, Amara, and Isolde are huddled together near the sofa, their faces pale with fear. Damon and Jackson are already half shifted.
“Damon!” I yell as I walk out to the entrance. “Get some guards to the perimeter lines right now! Seal the lower levels and activate the
secondary defense barriers!”
“On it! Damon yells, turning on his heel and barking orders through the mindlink as he rushes toward the back exit.
I scan the room, looking for the source of the problem. My gaze lands on the porch at the front of the house.
The glass front door is wide open, letting the freezing night air breeze into the warm hallway. And standing right there on the threshold, staring out into the dark woods with a stunned expression, is Roman.
Fury explodes in my chest.
I storm down the hallway. I reach out, grab Roman by the collar of his shirt, and violently yank him backward into the house, slamming him hard against the stone wall of the foyer.
“What the fuck did you do?!” I roar into his face, my canines lengthening into sharp fangs. My beast is screaming for blood. “You idiot! You opened the door! You dropped the cloaking shields!”
Roman looks at me, his eyes wide with a mixture of shock and fear. He doesn’t even try to fight off my grip. “I just wanted to leave, Kait 1 couldn’t stay here anymore. I didn’t know opening the damn door would drop the protection!
“You didn’t think!” I snarl, shoving him against the wall once more before letting him go. “You were so caught up in your pathetic feelings that you just handed our location directly to the enemy on a silver platter!”
Before Roman can even open his mouth to reply, a massive, deafening explosion rocks the entire foundation of the place.
BOOM!
The floorboards violently shake beneath our feet. The grand chandelier hanging in the center of the foyer shatters completely, raining shards of crystal down on the floor. From outside, the horrific, screeching wails of demon beasts pierce through the night an, closer than
they have ever been.
Damon comes rushing back into the foyer, his face covered in soot, his claws dripping with dark, demonic flood. “Kal! The front gate are completely gone! They brought some kind of device that dismantled everything within second! We’re surrounded!”
Lall my shoulders back, the silver light of my Lycan and beginning to crackle around my skin. I look at pution, then 1968, my
