Chapter 214

“Wait! Kai, stop. You’re not going to say anything?” I say, rising to my feet to face him.

He pauses near the exit, his hand resting on the door handle. He doesn’t turn around to look at me. “What do you want me to say, Lyra?”

I swallow hard, the painful lump in my throat making it difficult to find my words. He has not once called me his flower. Not since he

opened his eyes. He always calls me his flower, and the fact that he isn’t doing it now feels like a blow to my chest.

He must be pretty angry at me.

“I… I just told you I’m sorry,” I say, my voice cracking slightly. “And I told you that I believe you care about me. I don’t doubt your

intentions anymore, Kai. Please.”

Kai lets out a heavy, tired sigh, looking down at the floor. Then he slowly turns around to face me, leaning his back against the closed

door.

“You know what? You think you do, Lyra, but you don’t,” he says, his voice dropping into a pained, low tone.

“You don’t know the magnitude of what I feel for you. You have absolutely no idea how much of my life you consume. You occupy every

single one of my thoughts, and yet you keep thinking everything between us is just some game or a power play to make you submit.”

My eyes shine with unshed tears as I listen to the raw agony in his voice. He looks so exhausted, so deeply hurt.

“I’ve realized something during these past few days,” he continues, his gaze fixed on mine. “You will never trust me. You’ll never truly be mine because… you think I’m a monster who slaved you and took control of your life. And because you have your sights set on someone else. And I’m sorry, Lyra, but I meant what I said before the whole attack happened. I’m done fighting for you. I can’t keep destroying myself for a girl who doesn’t want me.”

“No! No! Wait, Kai, please!” I step forward, reaching my hands out blindly toward him. “I swear I trust you now! I do! I… I love you, Kai.”

Kai freezes. For a split second, shock flashes across his handsome face. His green eyes widen, and a tiny look of hope flickers in his gaze. He takes a slow, hesitant step back toward me, his sweet, familiar scent of mint and dark cedar filling my senses. It washes over me

completely. How does he manage to smell so damn good after sleeping for an entire week?

But the hope dies just as quickly as it appeared, replaced by a bitter, guarded expression. He shakes his head, backing away again.

“No you don’t, Lyra. You think you do right now because you feel guilty. You think you love me because I almost died protecting you. But

you don’t. I’ve seen what you’re like when you feel overwhelmed and crowded by me, and I’ve always been the cause of that suffocation.

I’m going to do us both a favor. I’ll pretend you never said those three words, Lyra. I will forget them so that whenever I see you with my cousin in the future, I won’t feel the urge to rip out his throat. I’m setting you free. You can go and be happy with him, in peace.”

Tears finally spill over my eyelashes, burning my cheeks as I rush across the room, closing the remaining distance between us. I reach up

and place both of my trembling hands on his warm cheeks, forcing him to look down into my eyes.

“No! Please, listen to me! The only person I want is you, Kai! Not Roman. Roman is just my friend. He’s someone I care about, yes, but

you? You are my mate. You are the only one I want, and I can’t live without you. Please don’t do this to us.”

Kai looks down at my hands on his face, his expression incredibly sad. He gently reaches up, wrapping his long fingers around my wrists,

and firmly pulls my hands away from his skin.

“You’ve been pushing me away so many times, Lyra. You’ve fought me at every single turn because you wanted your independence. Trust

me, you can definitely live without me.”

He releases my wrists and turns back around, reaching for the brass doorknob.

“Where are you going?” I scream, feeling my heart shatter into a thousand pieces.
