Kai pauses at the door, but he refuses to look back at me. “Back to the palace,” he says, his voice completely flat and hollow. “To resume
my duties as the crown prince. And to marry someone I feel absolutely nothing for. Goodbye, Lyra. You and your friends can stay here for
as long as you want. This house will always be open to you, and the protection wards will stay up. You’ll be safe here.”
“No… you can’t do this! Please, Kai, please don’t go! I’m begging you!” I sob loudly, the sound tearing violently from my throat. I feel like
my entire world is crashing down around my feet, leaving me in total ruins.
Kai stops dead in his tracks. His entire body goes rigid.
Slowly, he turns back around to face me. When I look at his face, my breath cuts short. His green eyes are red-rimmed, shining brightly
with his own unshed tears. He looks at me for one agonizing second before he suddenly crosses the room in two long strides. He grabs my
waist, pulling my body hard against his chest, and crashes his lips onto mine.
My entire body instantly comes to life as a wild, electric spark shoots through my veins. The kiss is incredibly soft, yet deep and intense
at the same time. It feels like he is trying to memorize every single curve of my lips, etching the taste of me into his memory forever so
he never forgets it. He holds me so tightly against his frame that I can barely draw air, his lips moving against mine with a tragic,
desperate hunger.
After just a few seconds, Kai violently wrenches his lips away from mine. He doesn’t let go of my waist completely, keeping our foreheads
pressed tightly together as we both pant desperately for air.
“I’m sorry,” He kisses my forehead and whispers against my skin, his voice cracking with emotion. “I had to have just one last kiss. One
last taste of your lips before I let you go for good.”
I look up into his face, my eyes wide with shock. The spark in his green eyes is completely gone, replaced by a dead heartbroken look. He
means it. He’s really leaving me. He’s really given up on us.
“Good bye, Lyra. Stay safe.”
He lets go of my waist, turns on his heel, and walks right out the bedroom door, closing it firmly behind him.
I stand there in the center of the quiet room, staring at the empty wooden door. The silence is deafening. My legs suddenly feel like
water, completely unable to hold up my own weight anymore. I collapse straight to the ground, my knees hitting the hard floorboards as I
bury my face in my hands.
