He begins the lecture, his voice being through the room. Today we discuss the Great Split. Thousands of years ago, we weren’t divided by packs. We were one spirit under the Moon Goddess Our origins began when the first Lycans sacrificed their human frailty to protect the earth from the shadows. The wolf
isn’t just a beast inside you, it is an ancient soul that chose you.”
I listen intently, my pen on my tablet. Even though I don’t have a wolf yet, hearing about the ancient spirits makes me feel elated.
I make sure to understand every word the instructor says, jotting down notes on my tablet. I need to make sure I’m ready for those weekly assessment tests
so I won’t lose this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
After about two hours, the instructor calls the class to an end.
“That is all for today,” he says. “For your assignment, I want everyone to research the First Family of Wolves. I expect a detailed report by our next session.”
As soon as he leaves, everyone gets up and starts walking out of the class. Erika turns to me, swinging her bag over her shoulder. “So, where are you going
from here, Lyra?”
I look at my tablet awkwardly. Where would I go? Prince Kai has not asked for me all morning.
“I’m not sure. I guess whatever the next activity is?”
Erika smiles and shakes her head. “We have meal breaks before the next round of activities. Do you want to come to the cafeteria with me?”
1 look at her, unsure if I even belong there. She seems to read my mind. “Don’t worry,” she adds. “The basic food is free for everyone. Unless you want something extravagant like the Level 3 wolves eat, you won’t have to pay. Come on,”
“Okay.” I say, feeling a bit relieved. “Id like that.”
Erika and I make our way toward the cafeteria. We’re walking through the hallway, when something suddenly flies through the air and hits Erika right on her
chest. She gasps in shock.
A group of students nearby erupts into mocking laughter.
Erika freezes. She looks down at the floor, her expression showing her hurt and embarrassed she is. When I look down to see what they threw. I gasp.
It’s a dead bush rat, with a bloody fur.
Erika starts to shake, tears gathering in her eyes. I suddenly realize why she called us “rats” earlier. She probably being bullied constantly, just like I was at home. A familiar anger fills my chest. I think about how people like us always have to suffer just because others think they’re superior to us.
I look over at the group of bullies-two girls and two boys-who are still screeching with laughter. Unable to stop the anger, I reach down, pick up the dead rat by its tail, and stalk right over to them.
They stop laughing and watch me, their eyes daring me to do something. I stop right in front of them and drop the dead tat at their feet. I make sure to drop it hard enough that a bit of the blood splashes onto their expensive-looking boots.
They look at me in total shock.
“The next time you do this to an innocent person,” I say, my voice steady and cold as if I’m not just bluffing, you’ll regret it

Chapter 23

They all Blare up in anger immediately. The tallest and meanest looking boy steps forward, his eyes filled with fury. I will destroy you, bitch!
He raises his hand, his fingers elongating into sharp claws, ready to tear into my skin.
I don’t cower. I don’t run. I just stand my ground and wait for the strike.
But it never lands.
I blink and open my eyes to see a very good-looking male standing beside me. He has a firm grip on the bully’s wrist, holding his hand high in the air and blocking the attack effortlessly. I can feel the power radiating off him in waves.
He’s a Lycan. A different one. And he just saved me from possible death.
