Damon walks over to me, placing a hand on my shoulder. “Kai, listen to me. Do not beat yourself up right now. Getting angry at

yourself won’t bring her back. All we should focus on right now is finding out where they took her.”

Someone else approaches. The moment I look up, my eyes land on Roman, who is standing near the edge of the clearing, looking

around with a pale, shocked face.

The fury inside me explodes like a volcano.

I rise to my feet and descend on him like a tornado. I tackle Roman straight into the dirt and straddle him. Then I start punching

him repeatedly in the face, the force of my blows cracking against his jaw.

“This is all your fault!” I yell in a raw voice as I hit him again and again. “I could have saved her! I could have reached her on time if

you hadn’t held me back like a complete fool! You did this!”

Roman tries to raise his arms to defend himself, his mouth already bleeding as he chokes out his words.

“Kai, stop! I didn’t know! I swear to the goddess, I had no idea she was in danger!”

“Kai! Get off him! You’re going to kill him!” Kara screams, rushing forward with Damon. The two of them grab my jacket, trying to

pull my body off Roman, but I’mcompletely blinded by my rage.

Suddenly, one of the demons on the ground cries out in a groan of pain.

We all freeze instantly. One of those bastards is still alive.

I drop Roman and rush over to the almost dead demon lying near a tree. I bend down and grab his scaly neck, lifting his head off the ground. I completely ignore the disgusting green slime that is their blood, which is smearing all over my hands and clothes.

I shake him violently, my face inches from his scary features. “Where the fuck is she?! Where did you take her?!” My voice echoes

through the silent woods.

The demon looks up at me through dying eyes. His breath smells like sulfur, and his body is already beginning to shrivel up. He

looks like he is about to give up and die right now.

“Answer me, you piece of shit!” I scream, tightening my grip on his throat until his bones pop.

The demon lets out a weak groan. But then, his cracked lips twitch upward. He looks up at me and smiles a disgusting, bloody grin.

“She’s… she’s already on her way to the master now, royal boy. You’ll never… you’ll never be able to save her.”

Then, his eyes go completely blank, his head rolling back as his life force drains away entirely. He dies right in my hands.

“Dammit!!” I raise my fist and punch the dead demon’s face into the ground. I hit it again, and again, and again, repeatedly

smashing his skull until the entire face smashes into tiny pieces in the dirt.

I stop, my breath coming in broken gasps. I feel like my entire world is crashing down around me, leaving nothing but ash.

I couldn’t protect her. Instead of being her shield, instead of being her happiness and her safe place, I hurt her repeatedly. I pushed

away with my toxic behavior, and now, my stupidity has sent her straight into the arms of real danger.

Tears stream down my face uncontrollably. I lean my head against the tree trunk, yelling “Fuck! Fuck! Fuck!”

Kara runs over to me and throws her arms around try neck. She hugs me tightly, crying as she holds me together. “Im so sorry, Kai I’m so sorry. We will find her.”

I hug her back tightly, burying my face in her shoulder, feeling completely broken. In the background, I can hear Damon talking to someone on the phone.

“Get the warriors over to the woods around the bonfire immediately! We have a code red. A student has been missing and capture by rogue demons. Secure the perimeter now!”

Kara pulls back slightly, wiping her tears as she looks at me with determination. “Kai, stand up. Stand up right now so we can look for Lyra. She was taken just a few minutes ago. They won’t be far from here. We can still catch their trail.”

I take a deep breath, trying to force my shaking legs to steady themselves. I stand up, wiping the blood from my face.

But the exact moment I rise up to my full height, before I can even see the figure coming out of the shadows, a heavy body rushes straight into me with the force of a truck.
