Chapter 284
Kai looks at me one more time, eyes tracing my face, before he turns around, grabs his bloody shirt from the floor, and walks out the front door of the
apartment. The moment the door clicks shut behind him, I release a long, heavy breath I didn’t even realize I was holding. my shoulders slump with relief.
Kara lets out another loud laughter, walking over to the kitchen counter to pour herself a glass of juice. “You know…Watching the two of you together is
literally like watching a chaotic romance TV show. It’s so exciting to watch from the outside. I can’t even imagine how it must be on the inside.”
I groan out loud in pure frustration and embarrassment, hiding my face in my hands for a second. “There is absolutely nothing going on between us, Kara, I
promise you. It was just a…momentary mistake. My head was hurting, and things just… got out of hand.”
Kara takes a sip of her drink, giving me a highly skeptical look. “Sure, sure. Whatever helps you sleep at night, Lyra. Anyway, do you feel any better now
after taking the special painkillers I gave you earlier?”
I look down at my leg, flexing my knee slightly. The sharp, biting pain from my fall in the forest is completely gone, replaced by a dull, entirely numbness.
“Yes,” I say, a genuine smile returning to my face. “It’s working like literal magic. The pain is gone.”
I walk over to her and wrap my arms around her waist in a sisterly hug. Kara laughs softly, hugging me back and pressing a sweet kiss to my cheek. She pulls away slightly, looking at my face. “Do you want to stay behind today and rest up some more on the couch? You still look a little pale.”
“Actually, no,” I say, shaking my head. “I promised my friends Amara and Isolde that I would meet them back at our dorm apartment so we could all hang
out and have a long movie night to celebrate passing the test.”
Kara nods her head understandingly. “It’s fine then. If you want to go, go. But I’m definitely going to have one of my personal royal guards follow you back
to your building.”
I instantly frown at that. “Kara, come on. I don’t need a guard just to walk across the academy campus to my own dorm. It’s completely unnecessary. The
campus is always safe.”
“No arguments, Lyra,” Kara insists, her voice turning completely serious as she sets her glass down on the counter. She looks into my eyes with a firm expression. “You have to be protected right now. Especially after today. Trust me on this.”
I let out a long sigh, realizing that arguing with a Lycan is entirely pointless. “Okay. Thank you very much, Kara. I appreciate it,”
I step forward to hug her one more time before I leave. But as I pull back from the hug, the light from the kitchen window hits her face, and I nece something I completely missed before. There are heavy, dark purple circles under Kara’s eyes. Her eyehes look swollen and puffy, as if she has spent the last several hours crying her eyes out in secret.
My heart drops with concern. I reach out and lightly touch her arm. “Kara, are you okay? What’s wrong? Your eyes are all swollen and puffy.”
The moment the words leave my mouth, Kara’s face compietely changes. The cheerful, teasing face she was wearing just a second ago drops instantly She looks panicked, her eyes darting away from mine as she pulls her arm out of my grip. She turns her back to me, wiping down the clean counter with a
nervous energy.
“O-oh, I’m completely fine, Lyra,” she stutters, her voice sounding forced and thin. “I just… I didn’t sleep well last night. Shifter harmones at whatever it’s nothing for you to worry about, seriously. You should get going to your movie night.”
“Kara, stop,” say, refusing to let her brush it off. I step around the counter, catching her hand and forcing her to stop wiping the surface. I look at ber Duity eyes, my heart aching for her. “Dont give me these fake excuses. You wouldn’t like it if I did that I know what you look like when you’re tired, and this isn’t it. You’ve been crying.”

I gently pull her by the hand, leading her over to the dining chairs. “Sit down with me. Tell me what’s wrong. You’re always taking care of everyone else. Just
