Chapter 296
Kai clears his throat roughly, rubbing the back of his neck.
“No, of course not. I have no idea who owns the apartment. All I own in this academy is my own apartment. And um… it’s not like I have personal, direct access,” Kai stammers, his usual smooth, confident demeanor faltering for a moment. He looks everywhere in the room except at my eyes. “I just… um…”
“Just what?” I ask, stepping closer to him, my voice turning incredibly impatient. “Kai, tell me the truth. Why are there cameras linked to you in our livin
space?”
Seeing that he can’t lie his way out of it, Kai quickly recovers his composure with an arrogant smirk across his lips as he looks down at me, trying to play off as nothing. “Relax, flower. I was simply part of the senior student committee that suggested installing high-level security cameras around the block. It wasn’t just for your girls’ specific apartment. It was for every other person living in this block, just for overall safety after the last security breaches. It’s n like I personally built the camera system myself or sat here watching you.”
I stare at him for a long moment, trying to read the micro-expressions on his face. I know for a fact he is hiding something deeper-probably the fact that he owns this entire building—but right now, I don’t have the emotional energy to fight him on it.
I let out a soft breath, crossing my arms. “Okay, fine. Whatever.”
Roman steps forward abruptly, his hand reaching out to grab mine. He pulls me gently toward his side, trying to create a physical barrier between myself
and Nick.
“Anyway, while you boys try to figure out the security feeds and catch the perpetrator, it’s still unsafe for Lyra to still be staying in this room,” Roman says urgently as he looks over at my brother. “The lock is compromised, and whoever did this knows exactly where she sleeps. Don’t you agree with me, Nick?”
Nick looks down at Roman’s hand on my arm, his expression hardening into a protective, brotherly expression He doesn’t release his grip on my shoulder, instead he pulls me back-to him. “Yeah, I completely agree that she can’t stay here. Which is exactly why he is going to come with me tonight.” He tugs m with him, trying to lead me toward the door. “She’s my sister, so I’ll take her to where I stay. Lyra will be with me”
“No way,” Roman argues angrily, his voice rising as he steps in front of the door, blocking our exit. *Nick, think about it logically. You don’t even stay on th main Academy campus. You live all the way out in the barracks. That’s outside the academy grounds and even more dangerous. Besides, It’s going to be hard for Lyra to come back and forth every single morning to keep up with her classes and her upcoming tests. It’s much convenient and safer if she stays with me at my apartment.”
1 “I don’t give a damn about convenience, Roman! Lyra stays with me, her actual family, and that is final. I am not leaving my sister in a prince’s dorm.”
I look between the two of them and my head begins to throb again as the repetitive back-and-forth arguments continue on. They’re literally talking about me as if I’m an object, a prize to be carried away and hidden in a cage.
Thankfully, the annoying argument is cut short when Kai’s deep, booming voice explodes through the room.
“Will both of you just shut the fuck up for ese goddamn second?” Kai yells, his green eyes flashing with dominance as he steps between Roman and Nick. The power in his voice makes both of them stop and quiet down. Kai doesn’t look at them instead, he turns his gaze entirely to me, his expression changing into something soft. “Let Lyra decide where she wants to be. She is an adult. Let her choose her own safety.”
Warmth instantly foods my chest at his words. I stare at Kai silently for a long moment, completely caught off guard Reen though he looks incredibly presed off and ready to murder someone, I’m so glad that he was the only one in this room who thought of giving me the chance to decide for myself. S
