He looks at me briefly, a warning flash in his eyes, before leading my mother away. This is my chance. If I can slip away while everyone is distracted by the music and dancing, I can get back to the apartment and figure out my next move.

I start to rise from my chair when King Giuseppe’s voice stops me shart. ‘Going somewhere, Prince Kai?” he asks wifh a knowing smile. Surely you won’t leave without dancing with your future mate and Queen?”

Before I can stop myself, I tighten my hand around her waist, squeezing her so hard as I glare down at her, the fury fueling inside me like a literal fire.

“Don’t ever mention her like that again,” I growl, my voice vibrating with a threat I don’t even try to hide. “Or I’ll make sure you regret it.”

Rina’s eyes immediately go wide. She stares at me with her mouth hanging/open, looking completely stunned. ‘Are you really fighting with me because of that girl?” she whispers, her voice shaking. “Are you really threatening your future mate because of some slave?”

Her eyes start to shine with tears.

I let out a sharp sigh, realizing I’ve gone overboard again. I mentally slap Vlad, because he definitely the reason I’m feeling this feral. Just the mention of Lyra’s name makes me want to lose my cool. It has to be this unfortunate bond.
