Chapter 76

Lyra

“That’s a shame,” I say, though my voice is dripping with sarcasm. ‘Anyway, I have lunch to zat. See you around, Jackson.”

I walk past him without waiting for a reply, Erika follows behind me. My appetite is gone, but for the first time in a while, I feel a tiny spark of satisfaction in my chest.

As soon as Erika and I sit down with Amara and Isolde, the atmosphere shifts. Amara and Isolde have been watching the whole interaction from the booth, and they’re practically vibrating with curiosity. Isolde barely waits for my tray to hit the table before she sits up straight, wagging her eyebrows at me like a maniac.

“Woah. Lyra,” she says, leaning over her pile of cotton candy. “Who was that hot guy you were talking to just now? Please tell me you re related to him because I want him. Seriously, what level is he in? He’s definitely not in level one, because I would have recognized that handsome face anywhere.”

“Will you shut up!” I blurt out, interrupting Isolde’s non-stop chatter. She playfully glares at me for a moment. I take a deep breath and poke at my pasta.

“To answer your question, yes, I’m in fact related to him,” I say.

Amara and Isolde both gasp. “Really?” Amara asks, her sandwich halfway to her mouth.

“Yes,” I mutter. “That’s Jackson. My brother.”

“He’s always been a jerk to Lyra, just like the rest of her family. He’s no different from his sister, Daisy.” Erika chimes in, her voice sounding a bit bitter.

“Well, He’s not especially mean to me,” I say, looking down at my food. “He just, doesn’t do anything. We’re not close, and we haven’t been for a long time.

But he’s not like Daisy.”

Thankfully, the girls seem to sense the tension and give up the topic. We start eating, and the conversation shifts toward other fun things-upcoming classes, the gossip about the senior wolves, and the food. But as I chew on my pasta, my mind starts to wander.

I’m actually thankful I haven’t bumped into Daisy again since that last run-in. I know why she’s staying away. It probably has to do with Prince Kai. Even though he’s annoying most of the time and can be downright cruel when he wants to be, I can’t deny that he has protected me from bullies. He even protected me from a member of my own family.

looked at like a piece of It’s crazy to think about how much has changed in just two weeks. When I first got here, I was constantly being called wolfless id trash, a slave that didn’t deserve to breathe the same air as them. Now, people either avoid me entirely or actually say hi to me in the halls. They know I’m close to Prince Kai and Kara, and that’s enough to keep their mouths shut or be friendly.

Without Kai, I never would have met Kara. She’s honestly the sweetest girl I’ve ever met. She treats me like I’m her baby sister, giving me whatever I want even when I don’t ask for it. She’s been so good to me that I feel like I have to do something in return. Since Kai hasn’t ordered me back to his place yet, I spend my free time helping Kara clean her apartment. I keep the place tidy and organized, even though she constantly tells me I don’t have to do it..

I’ve also been spending a lot of time in the garden shared by Kai and Kara’s apartments. I’ve been weeding and planting, but I’ve especially focused on the part of the garden that belongs to Kai. I’ve been planting new flowers there, making sure the ground is perfect. It’s not like I actually care about the guy or anything. I just feel like I should do something for him since he’s the reason I’m not dead.

‘Oh, please,’ Wyndra’s voice suddenly tackles me, echoing loudly in my skull. You’re planting flowers for him now? That is so sweet. Maybe you’re already having feelings for him and you’re just trying to deny the inevitable.”

War, i don’t have feelings for him. I argue back, my grip tightenifig an my fork. ‘It’s a thank you gesture. That’s it. He’s a prince and I’m a slave. It’s practical”

go back and forth, my internal argument with her getting more heated by the second. She’s so persistent and so annoying that I finally lose my cool.

“Oh shut up!” I groan out loud.
