Lyra
I’m running and running, my lungs are burning, but I can’t stop. The woods are blacker than anything I’ve ever seen. Every tree looks like a twisted bone reaching out to catch my clothes. Behind me, the sound of talons hitting the ground is loud and close. They’re coming for me. A whole pack of wolves with eyes glowing like hot coals in the dark. I try to move my leg faster, but the ground feets like wet clay, pulling at my feet.
As I’m running. I trip over a root and fall flat in the dirt. I try to get up, but the ground suddenly collapses beneath me. Dozens of bony hands burst out of the ground and grab my ankles, waist, and hair. They’re pulling me down, trying to pull me underground.
“No! No! Let me go!” My voice is raw as I scream, clawing at the dirt, but the grip is just too strong.
Then, the air turns icy cold. That’s when I hear a weird, scary voice whisper something, echoing through the trees and making me tremble right down to my bones.
“I’ve been waiting for you to awake, my Phoenix princess,” The voice whispers, sounding like dry leaves rustling as they scatter. “Very soon, you will wake up fully… and you will be mine. Very soon…”
The bony hands pull harder, their coldness biting into my skin. The voice fades into a low hiss that fills my head until I can’t hear anything else. I keep screaming until my throat aches, as the darkness swallows me whole.
“Lyra! Lyra, wake up!”
Suddenly, the cold is gone. I feel warm, firm hands on my shoulders, shaking me gently. The terrifying whisper is replaced by voices I know, voices that
sound desperate and terrified.
“Please, Lyra, come back to us,” a girl’s voice sobs.
I suddenly open my eyes, gasping loudly as I sit straight up. For a second, all I can see is the skeletal hands, but then the room comes into focus. I’m not in the woods. I’m in the Academy’s hospital. The smell of drugs and lavender fills my nose.
Kai and Kara are right there, standing close to my bed. They both look like they haven’t slept in years. Kara’s eyes are red and puffy, but it’s Kai who shocks me. This isn’t the cold, arrogant and unfeeling Prince I’m used to. He looks…different.
His face is pale, his jaw tight, and his eyes are filled with a heavy worried look that I’ve never seen before.
“Thank Goddess!” Kara says, clasping her hands. “Youre finally awake.”
I recall how that evil voice in my dream also said I’m awake. My body shakes uncontrollably. Without thinking, I sit up and throw my arms around Kai’s neck, burying my face in his chest. I sob into his shirt, my breath coming in ragged hitches.
“L…the dream was…scary,” I choke out, my tears soaking his clothes. “There was… there was a voice.”
To my surprise, Kai doesn’t push me away. He doesn’t go stiff. Instead, he wraps his arms around me, holding me so tightly it’s like he’s trying to fuse our bodies together. One of his hands moves to the back of my head, his fingers stroking my hair in a way that is so soft it makes my heart ache.
“Shh,” he whispers, his breath warm in my ear. “You’re okay. I’ve got you. You’re safe now, flower. I’m right here.”
I stay like that for a long time, just breathing him in. He smells like rain and sandalwood and something primal that makes my heart beat finally slow down. When I finally pull back a little, he keeps his hands on my waist, his thumb tracing small circles over the fabric of my gown.
