“Okay, brother! Kara interrupts, stepping in front of him and hitting his chest. Let’s get some air and cool down. Come on.

She doesn’t give him a choice as she practically drags him toward the exit. Kai looks back at us with a hard expression, then reluctantly follows her out. The door closes behind them.

Amara lets out a massive breath. ‘Whew! That was intense. I thought the walls were going to melt.”

I look at Roman, feeling terrible. I’m so sorry about… that.”

“Don’t worry about it, Lyra, Roman says immediately. He reaches out and touches my hand. “I’m just glad that we’re still good. That’s all that matters.

He smiles at me, and I find myself smiling back. I’m mostly glad that he was fatally injured after that encounter he had with Kai at the glasshouse. I was so

scared.

Roman stays for a moment longer before standing up.

“I’m going to leave you to chat with your girls now. Take care of yourself.*

He leans down, kisses my hand, and walks out of the room.

“Did you see the way he looked at you?” Amara squeals the moment we’re alone. “The tension was literally thick enough to cut with a knife?”

Isolde nods excitedly. “And it isn’t just him. Prince Kai is just as bad. Lyra, how are you even breathing right now?”

I stare at my hands as heat crawls up my neck. “I don’t know. It’s not… it’s not like that. They’re just being nice.”

“Nice?” Amara laughs. “Lyra, they treat you like you’re the only person in the palace.

“Oh, please.”

Erika’s biting tone makes us all freeze. She is standing by the window with her arms crossed over her chest. She isn’t smiling.

‘Deep down you know you love the attention they show you, Lyra,” Erika says. “Can you just stop pretending to be so overwhelmed? It’s getting a little old.”

I flinch as if she slapped me. The excitement in the room dies instantly. I look at her, trying to find a sign that she’s jokig, but her eyes are cold.

A heavy feeling of shame settles in my stomach. Am I pretending? I didn’t think I was. I certainly didn’t ask for two princes to be all over me for whatever

reason.

Erika clears her throat and grabs her bag. “Anyway, I have to go,” she says, her voice sounds withdrawn and dry. She doesn’t even at look me. My probation classes start in ten minutes. See you later, Lyra.”

She walks out without waiting for an answer.

For a moment, none of us speaks. We just listen to the sound of her footsteps fading down the hallway. Amara lets out a long, heavy sigh and sinks back

into the chair.

have to say something, Amara mutters, looking at the closed door. “It’s about your friend, Lyra. I don’t want to sound too nosy, but.

She britates, hiting her lip:

“Just say it.” Isolde interrupts, her expression serious. “It’s better to say it anyway.”
