But the words were already out, and he couldn't take them back. He could only force himself to follow through.
"The charity gala tomorrow is being broadcast live. You can watch the auction from here. If you see something you want, just tell me."
-
The annual charity auction gala was held in the grandest banquet hall at Aurelia.
The biting cold outside did nothing to dampen the enthusiasm of the attendees.
Everyone was dressed to the nines. The women wore heavy makeup and dripped in expensive jewels. The men were in sharp suits, exuding wealth and power.
On the surface, they were there for charity, but in reality, it was a networking event to rub elbows with the elite and pave the way for future business.
Adrian personally opened the car door.
Jocelyn stepped out, wearing an ice-blue gradient slip gown. The dress was heavily encrusted with brilliant diamonds, and its exquisite tailoring perfectly accentuated her flawless figure.
With her striking features and porcelain skin, she radiated an effortless, breathtaking elegance.
Even now, Adrian was completely mesmerized by her striking beauty. He had never realized his wife could look so devastatingly gorgeous.
He opened his hand, intending to hold hers.
Instead, Jocelyn slipped her hand into the crook of his arm, and they walked into the venue together.
Behind them, the third wheel looked incredibly displeased.
Determined not to be outshone by Jocelyn, Claire had specifically worn a haute couture gown and hired a famous makeup artist. Yet, she had still been completely eclipsed.
"Adrian!" Claire called out, lifting the hem of her dress as she jogged to catch up. "Wait for me!"
Adrian lowered his voice. "Once we're inside, mind your manners. Don't say the wrong thing or make a scene, or you'll embarrass the entire Lowell family."
Claire muttered under her breath, "I know, I know. You've been reminding me the whole ride here."
Jocelyn scanned the room. Her eyes locked onto a familiar silhouette.
It was Ethan.
He practically had "I hate you" written across his forehead.
Jocelyn laughed internally. The man had lived more than half a century, yet he still hadn't learned how to hide his emotions. Or perhaps he simply felt he had the right to be arrogant and couldn't be bothered to fake it.
Like father, like daughter. Audrey was clearly her father's precious girl; they both looked down their noses at everyone else.
"Adrian, I need to speak with you," Caleb demanded.
Adrian was as obedient as ever. "Of course."
He turned to Jocelyn. "Look around on your own for a bit. I'll come find you later."
"Mhm," Jocelyn replied.
The moment Jocelyn turned around, she noticed Claire craning her neck, scanning the crowd.
She was obviously looking for someone. That was probably the only reason she had insisted on coming tonight.
