Jocelyn gave her a knowing smile. "Looking for someone?"
"Mind your own business," Claire snapped.
"He didn't come."
"How do you know who I'm looking for?"
"Julian Vance."
"How did you know?" Claire demanded.
"Because the other day at the real estate center, your eyes were practically glued to him."
Claire huffed dismissively.
Feeling mischievous, Jocelyn provoked her. "Do you like him?"
Surprisingly, Claire didn't deny it. "Yeah, so what!"
She admitted it quite easily.
"Did you ever bother to ask if he has a fiancée?" Jocelyn reminded her.
Claire couldn't have cared less. "Of course I know he has a fiancée. But so what? A fiancée is just that—a fiancé. They're not married. People with wives get divorced all the time. A fiancée is nothing."
Jocelyn paused.
Well, that logic wasn't exactly wrong.
"So, you want to go after him?"
Disappointed that the man she wanted to see wasn't there, Claire pulled her gaze back. "So what? Is that a crime?"
Jocelyn chuckled softly. "No, not at all. It's up to you."
It didn't matter how interested Claire was if Julian wanted nothing to do with her.
Claire glanced over at Adrian, who was deep in conversation with Caleb Preston.
Taking her disappointment out on Jocelyn, she deliberately tried to get under her skin.
"See that? Mr. Preston really likes my brother."
Jocelyn raised an eyebrow. "And?"
"And don't you feel completely redundant?" Claire sneered.
Liam raised a thick eyebrow. "She's got a pretty face, but a rotten core. Seems the Lowell family's upbringing leaves much to be desired."
Jocelyn suppressed a laugh. "She's spoiled."
Claire, deeply offended, lashed out. "Who the hell are you?! How dare you speak to me like that! Are you just going to insult people?"
"Insult you? I'm tempted to hit you," Liam shot back smoothly. "I just got out of the joint, actually. I've been dying to hit something."
Claire jumped back. "You... you went to prison?"
"Yep. Murdered a guy. Did time for it."
Claire took another step back. "You killed someone..."
Liam flashed a dark, menacing grin. "Sure did. Cut him up, too. Sliced the body into tiny, bloody little pieces. And then I—"
Claire clamped her hands over her ears. "Stop talking! You're—"
"Mr. Bancroft."
Adrian, having finished his chat with Caleb, walked over.
