Marcus was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit.
No visitors were allowed.
It was Jeremy's first time facing a crisis like this, and he spent the entire time in a state of absolute panic.
"Mom, is Dad going to die?"
Diana shot a venomous glare at Jocelyn.
"That depends on whether your father can survive the curse certain people have brought upon this family."
Every breath Jocelyn took felt like inhaling glass. She swallowed hard, forcing her tone to remain steady.
"I promise you, once Dad recovers, I will do everything in my power never to set foot in that house again. And you can rest assured, I won't take a single dime of the Evans family's money."
Diana let out a bitter scoff.
"You talk a big game. You really expect me to believe you don't care about a fortune the size of The Evans Group?"
Jocelyn was too exhausted to explain herself.
"Believe what you want. I said it, and I'll do it."
"I just have one condition."
"Until my dad is fully recovered, I expect us to maintain the peace. Because I refuse to let him suffer any more stress."
"If you can actually keep your word, then fine," Diana sneered.
Diana and Jeremy finally left.
Jocelyn sat alone on the bench outside the ICU.
She sat there for over an hour.
A passing nurse noticed her devastatingly pale face and gently offered some advice.
"You don't need to wait out here, honey. If anything changes, we'll call you immediately."
"I just want to be close to my dad," Jocelyn whispered.
Because she didn't know what tomorrow would bring.
She didn't know how much time she had left with him.
Adrian's call finally came through.
Only then did Jocelyn remember the award ceremony.
"I can't make it today."
Adrian was instantly annoyed.
"We already agreed you were going. Why are you suddenly backing out?"
Jocelyn took a deep, trembling breath. "My dad... is in the ICU."
Adrian froze.
"He was perfectly fine. How did he end up in the ICU?"
Jocelyn didn't have the energy to explain. "Can you just come?"
She was so incredibly tired. She just wanted a shoulder to lean on.
"Don't worry. He'll pull through."
Jocelyn kept her head bowed. A single, hot tear escaped her eyes, splashing onto Adrian's hand.
He pulled her into his arms, comforting her gently.
"I'll get the absolute best specialists flown in. Just leave it all to me."
Jocelyn didn't push him away.
She simply didn't have the strength to push him away anymore.
Her head pounded, and her stomach twisted with a dull, sickening ache.
"Jo."
"Mm," she replied weakly.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
Jocelyn thought he was asking about her dad's heart attack.
"I just did."
"I'm talking about me and Audrey."
Jocelyn froze, slowly pulling herself out of his embrace.
"What do you mean?"
Adrian reached out, smoothing back a few messy strands of her hair.
