Last night, driven by an intense surge of lust and Audrey's intoxicating blend of verbal and physical seduction, Adrian's willpower had completely crumbled.
He had wanted to stop, mindful that Audrey was still physically recovering. But then she had dropped to her knees right there in the car...
The mind-numbing pleasure she gave him had been dangerously addictive. The memory alone made his stomach tighten with a rush of heat.
Afterward, he had planned to just drive home and sleep. But a sudden urge to see his son had brought them to the hospital instead.
And that was when they bumped into Marcus Evans.
At the time, Audrey had her hand possessively wrapped around Adrian's arm. Marcus had seen the entire display of intimacy.
But to Adrian's shock, Marcus hadn't gotten angry. He just asked calmly, "Adrian, can we talk for a moment?"
Adrian had sent Audrey away, and Marcus had dismissed his nurse.
Adrian vividly remembered every word Marcus had spoken.
"When Jocelyn married you, I was actually against it. But she told me she was deeply in love with you—so much so that she refused to marry anyone else."
"I know you never loved her. You only married her out of obligation. But you have to realize that forcing this arrangement was incredibly irresponsible to both her and yourself."
"Adrian, Jocelyn told me that you two have finally signed the divorce papers."
"I'm glad. I'm glad she finally learned when to walk away and realized you can't force what isn't meant to be."
"Thank you, Adrian. Thank you for letting her go."
"Considering the time you spent as husband and wife, I wanted you to part on good terms."
After saying his piece, Marcus had simply turned and walked away.
Adrian never could have imagined that their encounter would be the last time he ever spoke to the man.
"Mom," Jeremy whispered urgently. "She's still part of our family. Are we really just gonna let outsiders treat her like garbage?"
Diana's face was completely unreadable. "She doesn't think of us as family. If she did, she wouldn't have kept something as massive as a divorce completely hidden from us."
Jeremy realized she had a point and backed down.
Just then, the funeral home staff called Diana over to sign some paperwork, and Jeremy trailed after her.
They abandoned Jocelyn, leaving her completely alone as Adrian violently shoved her back.
Seeing Audrey cowering behind Adrian, playing the fragile victim, triggered a blinding rage in Jocelyn. She lunged forward to slap her again.
Adrian caught Jocelyn's wrist in a vise grip. "Jocelyn! Do not push your luck! The only reason I haven't hit you back is because your father is dead! Stop it!"
Jocelyn trembled uncontrollably, thrashing wildly to break his grip, swinging her free hand at him. "You are a vile, disgusting piece of trash! You're blind!"
