Maria had her ear pressed against the door, catching most of the conversation.
As Jocelyn walked in, Maria spat in the direction of the door in disgust.
She quickly turned to comfort Jocelyn.
"Miss Jocelyn, we don't need to put ourselves through hell for their filthy money. Don't you worry. As soon as my hand heals, I'll go out and find a job. I'll take care of you."
Jocelyn hugged Maria tightly.
"Maria, you're the best."
This kind of pure, unconditional care felt so incredibly good.
"But I'm not so useless that I need you to work yourself to the bone for me. Just you wait and see, Maria. You're going to find out exactly what your Miss Jocelyn is capable of."
"Once I've made enough money, I'll take you traveling all over the world. How does that sound?"
Maria grinned from ear to ear.
"Yes, yes, yes. I'll be waiting for that day. My Miss Jocelyn is so beautiful and so capable. I just know you're going to do great things."
Chatting with Maria lifted Jocelyn's spirits significantly.
She showed Maria the items she had brought back from the bank.
Maria's eyes widened in shock.
"Oh my goodness, Miss Jocelyn, where did you get all this?"
A pang of sorrow hit Jocelyn's heart.
"My dad secretly saved it up for me. He was afraid Diana would find out, so he kept it locked away in a bank vault all this time."
Maria let out a heavy sigh.
"It's clear your father really loved you."
Jocelyn said, "Maria, I'm planning to head out for a bit."
"Where are you going?"
Jocelyn hesitated.
Maria didn't mind at all.
"It's okay, Miss Jocelyn. If you don't want to say, you don't have to."
Jocelyn took her hand.
"I'll tell you everything when I get back. And who knows, maybe I'll bring someone back for you to meet."
Sarah laughed.
"I haven't even asked for the time off yet, and you're already lecturing me. It sounds like Mr. Vance's company is way more important to you than I am. Oh, wait, no."
"It sounds like Mr. Vance is way more important to you than I am."
Jocelyn chided her playfully.
"Where is your head at?"
Sarah said, "Alright, alright, I'm just joking. I know how rational you are."
"But I just can't stop worrying about you going out there all by yourself."
Jocelyn reassured her. "I'll call you as soon as I get there."
"Okay. Keep your phone on, and call me anytime. If anything happens, I'm coming straight to you."
"I will."
Adrian returned to Oakhaven Estates with a heavy mind.
Laughter and cheerful voices drifted from the living room.
It had been a long time since the house felt this joyful.
