Thinking he had actually crossed a line, Liam hurried over to smooth things over.
"I'm kidding, I'm kidding! Are you seriously mad?"
Sarah looked up, her eyes red.
Liam jumped back.
"Whoa, what's wrong? I said I was just joking!"
Sarah's lips trembled. "Liam... you're such a jerk!"
Liam folded faster than ever.
"I'm a jerk, a massive jerk, I'm so sorry! I really was just messing around. Our gorgeous Sarah would never harbor a secret crush on anyone, right?"
He probably shouldn't have said anything, because the tears were now brimming in her eyes.
Suddenly, it clicked for Liam.
Wait a minute.
The Sarah he knew was tough as nails. She was the kind of woman who would rather bleed out than shed a tear.
She had navigated the dating scene for years with an undefeated record.
She dumped guys; they never dumped her.
This reaction was completely out of character.
A thought struck him, and his face turned dead serious.
"Sarah, please don't tell me you're crying because I actually hit a nerve."
Sarah sniffled.
"What kind of stupid nerve?"
The words just flew out of Liam's mouth. "You like Julian."
The item in Sarah's hands slipped and crashed to the floor.
Liam stared at her, utterly speechless.
Wow.
This was really something.
He had no idea the emotional web between their friend group had gotten so tangled.
Sarah kept her head down, lost in her own thoughts.
When she finally looked up a long moment later, she had forced her usual brash demeanor back into place.
"Liam Bancroft, what kind of garbage are you spouting? Why the hell would I have a crush on Mr. Vance? If you keep running your mouth, I'm going to cut your tongue out!"
Jocelyn: "Is that any of your business?"
Claire: "Are you moving in with Julian?"
The question was so absurd that even Julian was visibly taken aback.
The Lowell family truly operated on an entirely different plane of logic.
Sarah couldn't stand the sight of her.
"Claire, leave your toxic Lowell family entitlement at the door. Do us all a favor and get out. Can't you see no one here wants anything to do with you?"
But when it came to being shamelessly thick-skinned, Claire was in a league of her own.
From another perspective, her obsession with Julian was almost impressive.
She was practically being shoved out the door, yet she wasn't even angry. She just stared right at Julian and demanded:
"Julian, don't you have a fiancée? Why are you always hanging around this woman? Whenever you reject me, you always use your fiancée as an excuse. So how come when you're with her, you suddenly forget you're engaged?"
The sheer audacity of her statement left everyone stunned.
Who would have thought this brat could actually string together a coherent argument when fighting for her twisted sense of ownership?
Julian's dark eyes narrowed. He opened his mouth to speak, but Liam beat him to it.
