Jocelyn hesitated for a brief moment.
"We are just very good friends with a lot in common. Besides, Julian has a fiancée. Why would I ever look at him that way?"
Through the passenger window, Sarah stared thoughtfully at the passing scenery.
The weather had turned cold, and the trees looked bleak and bare.
"He's an incredible man. It would be entirely normal if you did."
Jocelyn was utterly bewildered.
"Sarah, you are acting so strange today."
A long pause stretched between them before Sarah finally turned her head.
"Jo, let me ask you a hypothetical question."
Jocelyn: "Okay. Shoot."
Sarah: "If, one day, we both found a toy that we absolutely loved, but it was a limited edition—the only one of its kind in the world—what would we do?"
Jocelyn let out a light laugh.
"What kind of toy is that spectacular? And limited edition?"
Sarah: "That's why I said hypothetical."
Jocelyn didn't overthink it.
"If you wanted it, I'd let you have it."
Sarah: "Even if you loved it just as much?"
Jocelyn: "It's just a toy. No matter how much I loved it, my friendship with you means infinitely more to me."
"Sarah, we've been like sisters for years. Do you really think I'd break your heart over a toy? If you wanted it, it's yours."
Sarah pressed her lips together, staring at Jocelyn for a long, quiet moment.
Suddenly, the heavy fog in her mind seemed to lift.
"You're right," Sarah whispered. "What could possibly be more precious than what we have?"
In the other car, Liam was staring blankly out the window.
Julian was driving and ignoring him completely.
After a solid ten minutes of brooding, Liam got bored. He reclined his seat, crossing his arms behind his head as he got comfortable.
"Hey, Julian."
"Hmm."
"I'm a pretty great guy, right? So how come you've got women throwing themselves at you, and I can't catch a break?"
Julian glanced at him from the corner of his eye.
"You can't catch a break? If I remember correctly, you've gone through three girlfriends this year alone."
Liam waved a hand dismissively. "Those were just casual flings. Just pretty faces. I didn't actually care about any of them. They weren't even my type."
Julian smiled but didn't say anything.
Liam side-eyed him.
