The Man Who Waited vs. The Man Who Wasted novel Chapter 284

Sylvia wasn't holding back.

Claire yelped in pain.

Within seconds, she started bawling hysterically.

Jocelyn quickly stepped in to pull Sylvia away.

Not to save Claire, but terrified her mother might accidentally get hurt in the scuffle.

Claire scrambled to her feet and fled the apartment in absolute terror.

She tossed a pathetic threat over her shoulder as she ran.

"You're all going to pay for this!"

Jocelyn was trembling slightly as she took her mother's hands.

"Mom... do you remember something?"

But Sylvia yanked her hands free and instinctively hid behind Maria.

Maria had been her primary caretaker these past few days, and Sylvia had clearly grown attached to her.

Maria spoke up gently. "Miss Jocelyn, look at it this way. Even if she doesn't remember who she is, her instincts kicked in to protect you. She knows right from wrong. That means her mind is still in there, still fighting. Maybe with a little more time, she'll really start to heal."

Jocelyn gently straightened her mother's clothes.

She hoped Maria was right.

But Jocelyn had already made her peace with the reality of the situation.

Even if her mother stayed exactly like this for the rest of her life, Jocelyn would care for her and stay by her side.

As long as her mother was alive and safe, it was enough.

The chaotic interruption from Claire faded as quickly as it had started.

No one really cared.

Stooping to her level only made them feel just as childish.

Besides, they were moving.

They wouldn't have to deal with that nightmare of a girl ever again.

The moving truck arrived right on schedule.

Once everything was loaded up, Liam hopped into Julian's car.

Sarah took the passenger seat in Jocelyn's.

Maria and Sylvia sat comfortably in the back.

Exhausted by the day's events, the two women in the back seat fell asleep almost immediately.

The drive was unusually quiet. Sarah, who normally had a comment for everything, didn't say a single word.

The silence was entirely out of character.

Jocelyn assumed she was still fuming over the fight with Claire.

"Sarah, thank you for standing up for me back there. But please don't let it ruin your day. It upsets me to see you this worked up."

Sarah snapped out of her daze.

"Who cares about her? I'm not wasting my energy being mad at a spoiled brat. She's completely irrelevant. I've already forgotten about it."

"Then what's wrong?"
