Smack!
The slap landed hard, leaving Claire seeing stars.
Adrian's eyes were icy, a terrifying storm brewing within them.
Audrey slapped a hand over her mouth in shock, too terrified to make a sound.
This was the second time she had seen Adrian strike his own sister.
Audrey couldn't wrap her head around it.
Adrian had always treated his little sister like a princess.
But lately, he had grown colder and colder toward her.
Claire clutched her cheek, desperately holding back her tears out of pure fear.
Hearing the commotion, Eleanor came rushing downstairs just in time to see Claire get hit.
Her heart ached for her granddaughter as she snapped at him.
"Adrian, what on earth are you doing?! How could you hit your sister!"
Adrian was trembling with rage. "Grandma, why don't you ask her why I hit her!"
Eleanor marched over, pulled Claire away from him, and wrapped the girl in a protective embrace.
"There, there. Tell Grandma what happened to make your brother so upset."
Claire whimpered, too afraid to speak.
"It's okay. Grandma is here. Even if you brought the sky crashing down, Grandma would fix it for you."
Hearing that, Claire finally found her courage.
She recounted exactly what had happened.
When Eleanor finished listening, she didn't offer a single word of scolding.
Her expression was perfectly calm, as if Claire had merely stepped on a bug.
"Adrian, you've already handled the situation for Claire. Why are you still so angry?"
Fuming, Adrian sank heavily onto the sofa.
"What else was I supposed to do?! Watch her go to prison?"
"Grandma, we can't keep spoiling her like this. It's going to blow up in our faces eventually."
Eleanor scoffed dismissively.
