"What awful luck that Claire was the one who hit her," Eleanor complained. "I told you that Evans woman was nothing but trouble. She's a walking curse, bringing all this bad karma down on the Lowell family."
Adrian's brows knitted together tightly.
"Grandma, at the end of the day, her mother is dead. Do you really have to..."
"That's enough." Eleanor lifted her gaze sharply. "Since you've already handled the situation, we will never speak of this again."
After Eleanor left the room, Adrian kicked the sofa in frustration.
With her grandmother backing her up, Claire felt her confidence return.
"If there's nothing else, I'm heading back to my room. I'm tired. I want to take a nap."
"Don't you dare move!"
Afraid he would strike her again, Claire quickly stepped back.
"Haven't you hit me enough?! Are you seriously going to hit me again?"
Adrian clenched his fists.
"I really, really want to!"
Terrified, Claire kept backing away.
"The problem is already solved! What more do you want?!"
"Solved?" Adrian glared at her. "That was a human life, do you understand that?!"
"Grandma already said it—every life has a price tag! We'll just pay them off!"
"Besides, that woman doesn't even know it was me behind the wheel. Why are you so mad?"
Audrey walked over and nestled affectionately against Adrian's side.
"Adrian, that's enough. You hit her, you yelled at her. Claire knows she was wrong. Please stop scolding her."
Adrian closed his eyes and took a deep breath.
"Does she look like she knows she was wrong?"
"Claire is still young. She needs time to learn. Yes, this was a very serious mistake, but thankfully it's already been taken care of."
"Claire." Audrey shot her a meaningful look. "Hurry up and thank your brother. Even though he got mad at you, his first instinct when he found out you were in trouble was to fix it. See how much your brother loves you?"
Claire offered a sheepish grin and trotted over, swinging Adrian's arm affectionately.
"I'm sorry, Adrian. I know I messed up."
