The Man Who Waited vs. The Man Who Wasted novel Chapter 314

All eyes were on Jocelyn.

Penelope's gaze, in particular, was overflowing with raw anticipation.

Jocelyn thought back to what Penelope had just confided in the kitchen.

If agreeing to this could fulfill a woman's lifelong yearning to be a mother, why wouldn't she do it?

With a radiant smile, Jocelyn gave them her answer.

"Godmother. Godfather."

The couple stood absolutely paralyzed in shock.

They had braced themselves for her to ask for time to think, or to politely decline. They never expected her to accept so readily.

Penelope's eyes welled with emotional tears. She turned and practically ran into the bedroom.

Quentin, a man accustomed to masking his emotions in the world of politics, maintained a calm exterior, but the slight tremble of his rising smile betrayed his overwhelming joy.

Penelope quickly returned from the bedroom clutching a wooden jewelry box.

Inside rested a valuable emerald bangle.

It was high-grade jade, worth around half a million.

"Your godfather gave this to me when we got married. It's not the most expensive thing in the world, but it means everything to me."

"Today, I want to give this to you as a welcome gift."

Jocelyn wouldn't dare accept it.

"Godmother, this is too precious. I can't take it."

Penelope feigned a stern frown.

"You have to! From now on, you are our daughter. Parents giving their children gifts is the most natural thing in the world."

Jocelyn felt incredibly conflicted.

"I really can't. It's too..."

"Take it," Quentin finally spoke up. "It's rare for your godmother to take such an instant liking to someone. It must be destiny. If you refuse, it'll truly break her heart."

Jocelyn was caught between a rock and a hard place.

What was she supposed to do?

Julian reached over, took the box from Penelope, and lifted the emerald bangle.

"Try it on?"

Before Jocelyn could even process what was happening, Julian gently took her hand and slid the cool jade over her wrist.

The translucent green stone made her fair skin look even more luminous and elegant.

Julian's eyes darkened slightly.
