Hearing this, Jeremy completely lost his mind.
"Jocelyn! You'd rather bail out the asshole who hit me than pay my fine?! Are you out of your damn mind?!"
"Jocelyn! I'm your brother, and you're just going to leave me here to rot?!"
"If you dare leave me here, I'll never let this go!"
"I'm warning you, if you walk out that door without me, just wait and see what I do to you!"
Jocelyn turned a deaf ear to his screeching. She signed the paperwork and paid the fine without missing a beat.
Unable to stand Jeremy's tantrum any longer, the officer snapped.
"Sit your ass down! If you keep yelling, I'll throw you in a holding cell right now!"
"Please do," Jocelyn chimed in calmly. "It'll keep him from being a menace to society."
The officer shook his head.
This sibling dynamic was exceptionally toxic.
Seeing that she was actually leaving, Jeremy switched to a desperate, pitiful approach.
"Jo, I'm your brother. You really have the heart to just abandon me here?"
"Jo, please don't leave me."
"I know I messed up, okay? I promise I'll change next time!"
Jocelyn didn't even glance his way.
Change?
A leopard never changes its spots.
How long had it been since his last stunt? Now he was back in police custody.
Lord knew what kind of disaster he would cause next.
A few days locked up might actually do him some good.
Jocelyn didn't feel a shred of sympathy.
"Call your mother. And don't ever contact me again when you get into trouble. Otherwise, Diana will just accuse me of scheming to steal the Evans family fortune again."
Jeremy looked thoroughly miserable.
"The last time I got arrested, she beat the crap out of me and said if it happened again, I wouldn't get a single cent of the inheritance."
"She can't know about this, or I'm dead! She might actually kick me out of the house!"
Jocelyn drawled slowly.
"Relax. She won't kick you out. You're her precious only son. If you actually died, who would she have left to read her eulogy?"
Jocelyn walked back to the stranger.
"Your fine is paid. Let's go."
The man looked up in shock.
Jocelyn offered a slight smile.
"Not coming? You want to stay here?"
