Audrey was terrified. Just moments ago, Adrian had been perfectly fine. But ever since he took that phone call, his entire aura had shifted into something dark and volatile.
"Adrian, what's wrong?" she asked carefully. "Did something happen at the company?"
Adrian forced his temper down, masking it with a smooth, reassuring tone. "Todd just called. There's an issue with the upcoming exhibition."
He deliberately mentioned the exhibition to remind her of her own recent missteps.
It worked instantly. Audrey's face fell with guilt. "I'm so sorry. This is all because I made a huge deal out of nothing and got Grandma to drag you back here."
"Don't worry about it," Adrian murmured, kissing her cheek.
"I promise I won't do it again," she vowed, clinging to him. "From now on, I'll be the perfect wife. I'll stay right by your side."
"I need to head to the office and handle this," he said smoothly. "Stay here and pick out the rest of your dresses, including the reception gowns. Put it all on the card."
Though slightly disappointed, Audrey nodded obediently. She was determined to be the sweet, submissive partner he clearly desired, not a paranoid, jealous shrew.
Adrian didn't waste a second. He floored the gas pedal all the way to the corporate tower.
Todd was already waiting in his office, clutching a sleek folder. As soon as Adrian stormed in, Todd handed it over.
Adrian didn't even bother to sit. He stood in the middle of the room, his eyes scanning the stark black text on the white paper. Only now, seeing the irrefutable proof, did the reality begin to sink in.
Yet, his mind violently rejected it. The cognitive dissonance was suffocating. He recognized the words on the page, but stringing them together painted a picture of a woman he didn't know at all.
Jocelyn Lowell.
