The Man Who Waited vs. The Man Who Wasted novel Chapter 404

"Forget it, I was just too angry earlier. I know you've been exhausted these past couple of days. Once Claire's situation is sorted, you and Audrey should go away for a nice vacation."

A classic move—landing a harsh blow, then tossing a scrap of kindness.

From start to finish, Adrian didn't utter a single word.

Yet, his silence spoke volumes.

Audrey could faintly sense that something about him had fundamentally changed.

As for what exactly had changed, she couldn't put it into words.

Caleb had some business to attend to and needed to leave.

Audrey used the excuse of seeing him out.

Once they were outside, she couldn't hold back anymore. Tears of desperation pricked her eyes.

"Dad, why did you do that?"

Caleb patted her head dismissively.

"This is grown-up business. Stay out of it."

"Dad! If I had known you were going to hand that video over to the cops, I never would have given it to you!"

"If Adrian finds out you're the one who leaked the evidence, what am I supposed to do? He's going to hate me forever!"

Caleb offered a slow, calculating smile.

"Don't worry. He won't hate you."

Audrey's eyes turned red with frustration.

"Dad! What are you trying to accomplish? Adrian and I are supposed to get married soon. Why would you pull a stunt like this right now?"

Caleb's eyes turned icy.

Why?

Because that Evans woman backed him into a corner!

He originally just wanted the evidence in his own hands to use as leverage against the Lowells, a trump card to hold in his back pocket just in case.

He certainly wasn't stupid enough to sabotage the alliance right before Audrey and Adrian tied the knot.

A wedding of this scale was far too important.

But things hadn't gone according to plan.

Everything was spiraling out of his control.

Now, he was the one on the defensive.

Who would have thought that a discarded daughter from the Evans family could whip up such a massive storm?

Adrian's sudden appearance made Audrey stumble back in terror.

"Adrian..."

Adrian's expression was unnervingly calm.

It was a terrifying calm, like the oppressive dark clouds rolling in right before a hurricane.
