The Man Who Waited vs. The Man Who Wasted novel Chapter 405

"Adrian..."

Audrey jogged to keep up with him, her heart hammering with anxiety.

She followed him all the way to the study door, where he finally stopped.

"I want to be alone right now."

She stepped in front of him, blocking his path. "Adrian, I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to. I had no idea my dad would do something like that..."

Adrian looked down at her tear-filled, doe-like eyes, unable to name the emotion swirling in his chest.

He used to think that even if the romantic spark faded, he would always feel a sense of tender protectiveness toward her.

But now, he felt absolutely nothing.

His once deep affection had been ground into dust by her endless betrayals and passive complicity.

He had thought this woman was his one true love, but it turned out to be nothing more than a sick joke.

In the end, she was just another tool to be used against him.

Right on cue, a maid rushed over in a panic. "Mrs. Lowell, the young master seems hungry. He's crying terribly."

Audrey kept her gaze locked on Adrian.

Adrian let out a long sigh. "Go feed the baby first. We can talk about this later."

"Are you mad at me, Adrian?" she asked desperately.

He didn't answer. He just closed the door in her face.

Adrian locked himself in his room.

Surrounded by a thick cloud of cigarette smoke, the shadows played across his face, masking the turbulence in his eyes.

Caleb's words echoed relentlessly in his mind.

"Before he married your mother, your father had a woman he was deeply in love with. She was brilliant, elegant, and talented."

"Eleanor actually liked her, but unfortunately, the woman came from a poor background. She wasn't a suitable match for the mighty Lowell family, so your father ultimately married your mother for the sake of the family business."

"But he never cut ties with that woman. It wasn't until she died giving birth to Claire that their affair officially ended."
