Just as Sarah was about to start her car and speed off.
Liam planted himself firmly in front of the hood.
They locked eyes for a few tense seconds.
Defeated, Sarah killed the engine and stuck her head out the window.
"Liam, back the hell off if you want to live!"
Liam ignored her, circled to the passenger side, yanked the door open, and climbed in. He pushed the seat back and slouched down lazily.
After getting comfortable, he finally spoke, his voice deadpan.
"In my entire life, you are the first person who has ever dared to hit me."
Honestly, Sarah was already feeling a twinge of regret.
She had definitely acted on impulse.
But there was no way she was going to apologize.
"Hit me back, then! And once you're done, get the hell out of my car!"
Tsk!
Liam suddenly leaned closer, his brow furrowed.
"Did you swallow a grenade? What did I even do to you?"
Remembering what Jocelyn had just told him, he backed down a fraction.
"Okay, my bad back there. I shouldn't have shot my mouth off in front of Jo. But I wasn't trying to be an asshole, I just figured we're all close, so I made a joke out of it."
Sarah kept her head down, remaining silent.
Her emotions were a tangled mess.
She knew Liam was just joking. Their entire friendship was built on relentless banter and teasing.
But today, she didn't know what had come over her; she just snapped.
She had intentionally dodged him for the past two days, too.
But the reason she avoided him wasn't what Liam thought.
It was because...
Because she was terrified Liam would expose her real secret in front of Jocelyn.
Liam pulled back, leaning into his seat again.
"Are you worried I'm going to spill your little secret to Jo?"
Sarah flinched.
The word "yes" caught in her throat.
Liam gave her a sideways glance.
"Sarah, I'm not that damn bored."
Sarah snapped back.
"You're always that damn bored!"
Liam's eyes narrowed dangerously.
The car tore past Liam.
Liam, enraged, kicked the tire of his own car to vent his frustration.
Damn it!
If she had the guts, she better stay away from him for the rest of her life!
...
When Adrian saw Claire again, he almost couldn't believe his eyes.
The gaunt, hollow-eyed woman with dark circles before him was the same sister who was usually obsessed with her appearance.
For a fleeting second, a pang of pity hit him.
But the moment he remembered she was the daughter of his father and the mistress, any shred of sympathy evaporated.
Miserable and entirely isolated for days, Claire was oblivious to the outside world.
"Adrian! Why am I still locked up in here! Get me out! What is taking you so long! You're moving so slowly this time."
Adrian looked at her as if she were a total stranger.
"Out? Out where?"
Claire ran her hands frantically through her hair.
"Home! I want to go home! I am sick of this hellhole! This is no place for a human being."
If she stayed here any longer, she was going to lose her mind.
"You destroyed your home."
