He seemed to be looking up right at her window.
Jocelyn yanked the curtains shut in a panic, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs. She couldn't calm down.
She glanced at the clock. It was 2:00 AM.
The temperature had plummeted since nightfall. He was barely wearing anything warm. Was he going to freeze out there?
Jocelyn's mind snapped into focus. She shook her throbbing head, grabbed a heavy cardigan, and bolted out the door.
She didn't even bother changing out of her slippers before she threw herself into the elevator.
She sprinted out of the lobby and into the street. But there was no one there.
Jocelyn let out a self-deprecating laugh. Was she losing her mind? Had she just hallucinated the whole thing?
A bitter gust of wind ripped through her, making her violently shiver. She pulled the cardigan tighter around herself, but the knit fabric offered zero protection against the biting cold.
She was just turning around to head back inside when a heavy wool coat settled over her shoulders.
Along with the sudden warmth came a familiar, raspy voice.
"It's freezing. What are you doing out here dressed like that?"
His tone carried a hint of reprimand, but it was dripping with concern.
A massive lump formed in Jocelyn's throat, and tears threatened to spill over. She tilted her head up, blinking hard to keep them at bay. She wanted to smile, but she felt like sobbing.
It wasn't a hallucination.
It was really him.
"Go back inside. It's late. You shouldn't be staying up," he murmured.
Jocelyn took a deep, shuddering breath and turned to face him.
Her mind was completely blank. She had no idea what to say.
Julian just repeated, "Go inside."
Instead of moving, Jocelyn grabbed his hand and pushed his sleeve up.
The dirt and grime from the struggle were still there. The nasty scrape on his wrist was still there.
He hadn't treated it at all.
Jocelyn frowned deeply. "Why haven't you cleaned this up? What if it gets infected?"
Julian pulled his hand back gently and rolled his sleeve down, putting a deliberate, painfully polite distance between them.
