When Adrian Lowell woke up, his head was pounding as if it would split open.
He had drunk too much with Caleb Preston last night; he didn't even know how he'd gotten back to his room.
His room?
The lace-trimmed comforter, pink curtains, and ornate bed made the whole room look like something out of a fairy tale.
This was Audrey's room.
The room hadn't always been like this.
After Audrey moved in, she had it redecorated, even replacing the bed.
Because Audrey didn't like the bed that Jocelyn had slept in.
Adrian, feeling guilty about the hardships of her childbirth, had indulged all of Audrey's requests.
Now, for some reason, Adrian found himself missing the room's previous simple, yet warm, appearance.
The woman beside him suddenly turned over.
Adrian glanced at her and immediately looked away.
Her nightgown had slipped, revealing the fullness of her chest.
Because she was breastfeeding, Audrey was meticulous about her hygiene, so she carried only a faint, clean scent.
As a normal man with such a sensual temptation beside him, Adrian felt no desire whatsoever.
Adrian prepared to get out of bed.
But Audrey moaned softly and woke up.
"Adrian, you're awake."
Her voice was low and syrupy, edged with deliberate temptation.
Adrian wanted a cigarette.
But the thought that the maternity nurse would be bringing the baby in for feeding soon made him resist the urge.
"How did I end up sleeping in your room?"
Audrey looked completely content.
"You drank too much with Dad yesterday. You stumbled into my room, so I had to let you sleep here."
Audrey giggled. "My dad is still sleeping in the guest room."
Adrian didn't doubt the truth of her words for a second.
And the reason Audrey dared to tell this lie was because she had backup.
Backup in the form of Michelle Lowell.
Adrian had been drunk last night.
Audrey's eyes turned red.
"Adrian, do you know why I refused to remarry and insisted on staying with the Lowell family?"
Adrian was somewhat distracted.
"Isn't it because you loved Arthur?"
Audrey shook her head. "No. It's because I love you."
Adrian was completely stunned.
"What did you say?"
Audrey suddenly threw her arms around him.
"Adrian, I've kept these words in my heart for so long. I've wanted to tell you so badly, but I was afraid. I was afraid that if I told you, you would look down on me and send me away."
"Adrian..." Audrey tightened her grip around his neck. "In the time we've spent together, seeing how good you are to me, I found it so hard to control my feelings. Gradually, I realized... I've fallen in love with you."
Before Adrian could react, Audrey's lips were on his.
She kissed him suddenly.
It wasn't until her tongue pried his lips apart that he snapped back to reality. He grabbed her arms and pushed her away.
