Adrian's voice rose unconsciously.
"Audrey! What do you think you're doing!"
Audrey gazed at him with deep affection.
"Adrian, I love you."
Adrian's mind was in turmoil.
"Audrey, what nonsense are you talking!"
Before, if he had heard her say she loved him, he would have been overjoyed.
But now, Adrian couldn't feel any happiness at all.
Audrey grabbed his hand.
"Adrian, I'm not talking nonsense. I'm serious. I've really fallen in love with you. And... and you like me too, don't you?"
Did he like her?
Adrian couldn't tell anymore.
Were his feelings for her affection or pity?
"Audrey..."
"Adrian," Audrey interrupted him. "I won't ask for any title from you, and I certainly won't ask you to divorce her and marry me. I just want to stay by your side and love you. Is that okay?"
Adrian's emotions became complicated.
He felt a sense of regret.
Regret for walking into this room and sleeping in this bed yesterday.
He also felt a pang of pity.
He felt sorry for the way she looked now—tearful, vulnerable, and utterly miserable.
But he also felt a twinge of guilt.
He hadn't forgotten that he was a married man.
And his wife had only been gone from the house for a day, yet he found himself missing her.
Adrian looked at her tear-streaked face, his sigh heavy.
"Audrey, I admit, I did like you once, but that's in the past. And now, I have a wi—"
"Adrian," Audrey reached up and covered his mouth. "Don't say it. I understand."
"I understand your commitment to your marriage, and I understand you don't want to be a husband people condemn. So, I don't ask for anything. I just ask that you let me stay by your side."
"Even if..." Audrey's tears spilled down her cheeks, "even if it's just as your sister-in-law."
How could Adrian call out the name of a woman he hated in his dreams?
It wasn't until Adrian called out the name again that Audrey believed it.
At that moment, Audrey was filled with hatred and anger.
She had wanted to slap him awake.
But in the end, she couldn't bring herself to do it.
She was truly in love with this man.
Caleb Preston, usually stern and imposing, now showed the loving side of a doting father.
"If he didn't like you, he wouldn't be so good to you. Silly child, you now carry his child. He won't abandon you."
Audrey was filled with anxiety. "But that child..."
Caleb immediately cut her off. "Audrey! The walls have ears."
Audrey clamped her hand over her mouth in fear.
Caleb patted her head. "Audrey, don't forget what I told you. Arthur is gone. You have to hold on tight to Adrian to secure your place in the Lowell family."
Audrey bit her lip and nodded. "I know, Dad."
"As for that woman, Jocelyn..." A fierce glint flashed in Caleb's eyes. "Don't worry. Dad won't let her stand in the way of you and Adrian."
