The Mark He Bit Into Me novel Chapter 5

Chapter 5

“Whose child is that?” he asked hoarsely.

I walked to Elio and wiped the tears from my face.

“That’s none of your business.”

But Luca had already moved. He lunged toward the boy.

Elio shrank behind me in fear, and I stepped forward, shielding him as I met Luca’s bloodshot eyes.

“Mr. Vitiello, please don’t make things difficult for a child.”

“How old is he? Is he mine?”

His voice trembled.

“Summer, tell me.”

“Six.” My tone remained calm. “This is my private life. I don’t owe you an explanation.”

Elio had been born during a night of violent storms in a roach–infested apartment.

I had called my father’s phone again and again, but he never answered.

Thunder roared outside while my screams filled the room.

When the baby finally cried, I stared at his tiny face that looked so much like Luca’s and felt a wave of dizzying shock.

The man who hated me had given me a piece of himself.

Luca staggered backward and hit the wall.

“That’s impossible. That can’t be…”

I held Elio tightly. “I don’t know what you mean.”

“I thought you hated me,” he said weakly. “Why didn’t you abort him?”

I did hate him. Sometimes I even imagined him burning alive.
