The Mark He Bit Into Me novel Chapter 69

Chapter 3

Just then, Nathan and his father walked through the door.

“What’s going on?!”

Nathan froze for a second, then sprinted to my side.

“She… she just fell!” Sophie stammered, already trying to distance herself.

I was in too much pain to form words, I just grabbed Nathan’s arm.

“The… hospital… the baby…”

Nathan scooped me up in his arms and ran for the garage.

I went through a solid day and night of agonizing labor before the baby finally came.

When they found out it was a son, the entire Hale family was ecstatic.

But the moment I could think clearly, I confronted Nathan about the maternity retreat.

“That baby would still be inside me if she had not attacked me. He is two weeks early

because of Sophie.”

“Nathan, I am not coming home with you until your parents are gone.”

He managed to look surprised, but immediately started making excuses for her.

“Honey, she’s just… she’s old, she panics about money. You just gave birth. Please, just rest. I

will handle this.”

I hired a private nurse for the rest of my hospital stay. As expected, Sophie never showed her

face.

The day I was discharged, I gave him one last check.

“Are they gone, Nathan? Because I will not walk into that house if she is still in it.”

He flinched. He forced an awkward, placating smile and reached for my hand.

“Ella, come on. Your health is the only thing that matters right now. Do not fixate on this.”

“My parents just want to see their grandson. It is not permanent. I promise, just get through

your recovery, and I will send them home.”

I pulled my hand away.

“See their grandson’? Nathan, are you pretending to forget why I was in the hospital in the

first place?”

“Or did you just assume the assault and the twenty-four hours of premature labor just

slipped my mind?”

“I told you, get them out, or we get a divorce. I was not bluffing.”

The smile vanished. He sounded completely cornered.

“Alright, alright! I get it. I know you have been through hell.”

“I will take care of it. I said I will take care of it, okay?”

Two days later, I walked through our front door.

His father was sitting on the sofa, legs crossed, reading the paper like he owned the place.

Sophie came bustling out of the kitchen with a plate of fruit, a sickly-sweet, exaggerated

smile plastered on her face.

“Oh, my precious grandbaby is home! Let Grandma see him!”

I instinctively turned, shielding the baby from her reaching hands.

“Why are they still in my house?”

Sophie’s hand froze mid-air. Her face darkened.

“Your house? This is my son’s house. And I will be here as long as I like.”

“Just because you produced a son does not mean you’ve forgotten your place. You do not

make the rules here.”

I slowly lifted my chin, ignoring the raving woman. I locked my eyes onto Nathan.

“This is you ‘handling it”?”

His whole expression snapped. He was done placating me.
