Chapter 1
Alexander Hayes’ first love suddenly had a relapse of depression and jumped off a building.
In a fit of rage, he dragged me, eight months pregnant, to a free-fall ride, ordering his men to tie
me to the seat.
“If you hadn’t provoked Lila on purpose, she never would’ve had a breakdown or jumped!”
Terrified of heights, I broke down crying, begging him to let me go. I promised I’d never appear in front of Lila Monroe again.
But Alexander only gave a cold shake of his head.
“Grace, for the baby’s sake, I won’t divorce you.” His voice was like ice. “But the pain you caused
Lila, I’ll make sure you pay it back a hundredfold.”
He ordered the ride to be set for an hour-long cycle, then turned and walked away.
As the machine climbed higher and higher, I screamed and struggled in terror.
The moment gravity disappeared beneath me, a hot rush of pain tore through my body.
Three days later, Alexander finally remembered me, who was still strapped to that free-fall tower.
“Grace,” he said coldly, “Lila’s fine now. If you kneel and apologize to her, I’ll let you down.”
What he didn’t know was that blood had already drenched the seat, and the child he’d longed for…
had been flung out of me, nothing but a broken mess.
“Dr. Franklin called this morning,” Alexander said, his brow furrowed, irritation flashing in his eyes. “That woman didn’t show up for her prenatal checkup again. What game is she trying to play now, just to get my attention?”
Mr. Collins, the old butler, blanched. His voice trembled.
“Sir, Mrs. Hayes hasn’t been let down yet. And she’s terrified of heights, she can’t even step onto a second-floor balcony. She’s eight months pregnant… she might be in danger.”
Alexander paused, surprised. “She’s afraid of heights?”
Before the butler could finish, Alexander waved him off impatiently. “It’s just a thrill ride, not an actual jump. Maybe this will teach her a lesson, so she won’t dare bully Lila again.”
Mr. Collins fell silent, not daring to argue.

But the amusement park manager couldn’t hold back.
“Sir, three days ago, Mrs. Hayes was screaming hysterically when we started the machine. Then
she went completely quiet.”
“She’s still carrying your child, your own flesh and blood. Maybe you should at least check on
her…”
Alexander’s face twisted with disdain.
“I knew it. Even her fear of heights is fake. How could she be sitting there silently otherwise?”
“Grace has always been manipulative. Fine, let her stay up there one more day. Tomorrow, bring
her down to kneel before Lila. Once she apologizes, this matter’s over.”
He waved the manager away and strode toward the bedroom.
On our marital bed lay Lila, half-covered by the sheets.
Alexander’s throat tightened as he walked closer, his Adam’s apple bobbing. In the next second, he
lowered his head and kissed her swollen lips.
Lila let out a soft moan and blinked awake, pushing gently at his chest. “Alex… this is your bed with
Grace. If she finds out, she’ll be heartbroken.”
