Chapter 69-1
Dad has been rearranging the five plates on the dining table for ten minutes, and seeing as he’s a man who runs an MC and is known fearsome and ferocious, it’s oddly sweet to see him so well. Sweet. Nervous.
“The plates were straight,” I tell him.
“They weren’t,” he protests.
“They really were, Dad.”
“But they’re better now, right?”
Mayhem leans against the kitchen counter, drinking a beer and watching with open amusement. “He’s moved my tea cup three times.”,
Dad glares at him. “Because you keep touching it.”
“I’m checking whether it still works.”
“It’s a fucking tea cup.”
“Exactly. Very complicated machinery.”
Jade walks in carrying two enormous paper bags. “Someone help me before dinner ends up on the floor.”
I hurry over and take one from her. The bottom is warm against my hands, and the smell immediately makes my stomach growl.
Mayhem reaches for the other bag. “What did you order, babe?”
“Chinese.”
“Yeah, I gathered that.”
“Then why ask, oh husband of mine?”
He peers inside. “Because I need to know whether you remembered the ribs.”
“I did.”
“The crispy beef?”
“Yes.”
“Spring rolls?”
“Yes.” Jade starts unpacking cartons onto the kitchen island. “Now stop treating me like a damn waitress, and get your ass over here and help me. I got plenty of vegetable dishes, too. Tofu with black bean sauce, salt-and-pepper tofu, vegetable chow mein, stir-fried greens, mushroom rice -”
Mayhem stares at the growing collection. “Did you order for Willow or adopt a panda?”
“She’s vegan.”
Chapter 69.
“She’s one person.”
“She may be hungry.”
“She lives in a commune. They probably survive on sunlight and good thoughts.”
The doorbell rings, and every one of us goes quiet.
Mayhem glances around. “Normal,” he says tersely. “Everyone act normal.”
“You first,” I tell him.
“Impossible.”
Dad straightens his shirt, then immediately looks annoyed with himself for doing it. “I’ll get it.”

He walks out of the kitchen, and the rest of us remain where we are for approximately two seconds, then Mayhem moves towards the hall.
Jade catches the back of his cut. “Give them a minute.”
“I’m only listening.”
“That’s called eavesdropping.”
“It’s called family awareness.”
She pulls him back with a huff, and I stand beside the counter, trying not to strain for voices. The front door opens, there’s a murmur Dad’s voice, then Willow’s. It’s soft, and I think a little uncertain. A moment later, they appear in the kitchen together.
Willow is wearing a long purple dress, pink ankle boots and a scarf with little mirrors sewn all over it. Her dark hair is loose around her shoulders, unfeathered tonight, and half a dozen bracelets shift at her wrist when she lifts one hand.
“Hello.” She gives us a cautious smile. “Thank you for inviting me.”
Mayhem glances at her clanking bracelets, then at me. I narrow my eyes like I’m taking aim, and he wisely says nothing.
“Hi Willow. It’s good to see you again.” Jade steps forward. “I’m so glad you came.”
“I’m so glad you asked me to come,” Willow says with a smile that seems more comfortable. “Something smells amazing.”
“We ordered Chinese,” Jade says. “I hope that’s okay?”
“Definitely.” Willow’s face brightens. “It’s my favorite.”
Mayhem looks betrayed. “You live in a commune and you eat takeaway?”
Willow turns to him. “Sometimes we even use money.”
I choke on a laugh and his eyebrows lift. Then, slowly, he grins.

Well, all right,” he says.
Willow cocks her head, her long hair cascading over her shoulders. “I was told you were difficult.”
“Who?” Mayhem says, scandalized. “Who said that about me?”
