My lower back throbs with a deep, dull ache as I lean over Dad’s desk, trying to sort through
the links that Jade sent me about amnesia, and chances of full recovery.
It does not make for optimistic reading.
Every breath I take feels heavy. The baby shifts against my ribs, a sharp, sudden nudge that
makes me rest my hand flat over the swell of my stomach.
The door to the office opens, the hinges giving a soft creak.
Trench walks in, carrying a wide wooden tray loaded with a massive plate of fresh pastries
and four steaming mugs.
Right behind him are Roxy, Flea, and Sly, who I now think of as My Irregulars.
They didn’t sneak in, exactly: they drove straight through the back gate in their beat–up
delivery van, painted cleanly with a fake local alcohol distributor logo. To Detective Jameson
Miller and his cops sitting out front, it just looks like the clubhouse bar getting another
mundane mid–week drop–off.
“Brought these guys for you, Zara,” Trench says, as he sets the heavy tray on the edge of the
desk. “And Willow dropped these off this morning, still hot from the oven.”
“Jesus, Miss Zara,” Flea says, pulling his hands from his hoodie pockets and offering a quick,
tired smile. “It’s a freezing out in that yard.”
“You guys sure know how to blend in,” I say, sitting back in Dad’s heavy leather chair. “Miller’s
guys out front didn’t even twitch when your van pulled up?”
“Not a chance,” Roxy says, unbuttoning her damp fake–fur coat. “As far as the city cops are
concerned, the Skulls just have a very healthy appetite for bourbon and draft kegs. They don’t
give a delivery van a second glance.”
Trench nods once to me, wiping his hands on his jeans. “I’ll leave you to all it. Got guard
rotations to double–check out back, but you let know if you need anything more.”
He turns and slips out the door, pulling it shut behind him.
“Willow is a saint,” Flea declares the second Trench is gone, snatching a pastry off the
