The MC President's Forsaken Wife (Zara and Knox) novel Chapter 12

Chapter 12

Knox

The Grinning Skulls MC clubhouse has never been a place a man walks into without thinking about what it means to be there. Not because of the building itself, which is nothing more than concrete and steel, but because of who sits inside it, who watches from the edges, who remembers every debt and every favor as if they’re written into bone instead of ink.

As I cut my motorcycle engine, I take a moment.

I remind myself that Zara signing those papers means nothing on its own. Not yet… because I haven’t signed jack shit. And that – that’s where my control still sits.

I swing off the bike, rolling my shoulders once as I take in the men stationed where they always are, watching without appearing to. I don’t rush, don’t push forward like I own the place, because I don’t and pretending otherwise would be the fastest way to turn a conversation into something else entirely.

Respect. That’s the currency that matters here. And I spend it carefully.

I move accordingly, opening the door quietly, aware of the way the room shifts as I enter.

Cobra Callahan, President of the MC, sits at the far end of the bar, exactly where he always sits. It’s like the room arranged itself around him years ago and never thought to change.

Like his namesake, his body sways slightly from side to side in a slow, almost hypnotic rhythm that never quite settles.

Mayhem stands to his right, Cobra’s Vice-President, Zara’s older brother, and my former best friend. He carries the same eyes as his father, the same weight behind them, though everything else about him cuts differently: the shock of blond hair, the tension in his posture less contained, more immediate. It’s like he’s always half a step away from deciding that words aren’t worth the effort.

I cross the room. When I stop in front of them, I let the silence sit for a moment, not because I need time to think, but because anything said too quickly here gives away more than it should.

“I’m looking for Zara,” I say in my most deferential tone.

Cobra doesn’t stop moving, that slow, side-to-side shift continuing as though the words have no immediate effect on him. His gaze narrows slightly, though, focusing in a way that suggests the conversation has already moved somewhere more interesting than the

question itself.

“She’s not here,” he says.

Claim

“She signed the divorce papers,” I say, letting the statement land between us without turning it into something that can be debated.

Cobra’s black gaze doesn’t waver. “I know.”

Of course he does. There isn’t much that happens to Zara that doesn’t pass through him eventually, whether she wants it to or not.

I nod, acknowledging that without giving anything else, then I say, “But I haven’t.”

The words settle into the space between us. The point of this entire conversation laid out

cleanly, because that is what matters. Not her signature, not her gesture. Mine. The final step, the one she expected. The one that I’m not fucking giving her.

“So you’re saying that you’re still married to my daughter,” Cobra says.

“Exactly. Nothing at all has changed.”

The slow sway of Cobra’s body continues, his head tilting slightly now, as though he’s examining the shape of what I’ve just said from a different angle.

“Is that what you think?” he asks, far too mildly.

“That’s how it works,” I reply, my tone flattening just enough to make the point without escalating it.

Mayhem lets out a short, humorless laugh. “You really don’t get it, do you dickhead?”

I turn my head just enough to acknowledge him, ignoring the insult. “Then explain it to me.”

Cobra doesn’t rush to fill the space. When he finally speaks, it’s with the kind of deliberate clarity that leaves no room for misunderstanding.

“That agreement,” he says slowly. “Was built on the marriage.”

“And the marriage still exists,” I say.

“Yes,” he agrees. A pause. Then –

“But not the same one.”

The words land wrong. Not because I don’t understand them… because I do.

“Zara signed,” Cobra continues, his gaze holding mine. “She walked away. She made her

position clear.”

“That doesn’t finalize anything,” I cut in, because I can see where this is going and I’m not letting it land there uncontested. “Without my signature, it’s not done.”

Claim

“Legally,” Mayhem says, his voice rough with something personal that has nothing to do with contracts and everything to do with his sister. “Maybe.”

“And otherwise?”

He smiles in a way that’s definitely not friendly. “You’ll find out.”

And for the first time since I walked in, I finally get what’s happened. None of this is about paperwork or technicalities that I can control; this isn’t about me choosing when to sign and

when not to.

“So what changes?” I ask finally.

Again, Cobra doesn’t answer immediately. He lets the silence stretch, lets it settle, lets it press in just enough to make the point without having to spell it out.

“Things,” he says at last.

The answer is deliberately vague. I step back slowly, my expression giving nothing away because I don’t lose ground in front of people who are waiting to see if I will.

“We’ll revisit the terms,” I say. “I’ll call you in a few days.”

Cobra doesn’t respond, which is answer enough.

Outside, the air feels colder, the motorcycle engine roaring to life beneath me, the sound cutting through everything else as I pull away without looking back, my thoughts racing.

Everything is fucked… because of her. Because she signed, because she walked away without giving me the chance to pull her back into place. Because she didn’t do what she was supposed to do.

My grip tightens slightly on the throttle as the road opens ahead, the city blurring into sharp, controlled lines as my mind settles into something colder, something clearer:

That bitch thinks this is over. She thinks that she gets to walk away, take control of the situation, decide how it ends.

No. No fucking way. I can still fix this, get it all back the way that I want it… and I will.
