Chapter 74-3
Not Jade.
Jade’s voice has a rasp to it when she’s tired, a dry edge from too much soffee and too little patience. This voice flows, like music, or a summer breeze.
My smile fades. I take another slow step, holding on to the wall for dear life.
Then I hear Locke laugh, a real laugh, the kind I haven’t heard all day. Relief loosens something in my chest, and I’m glad that he’s able to laugh. He deserves a few easy moments today, after being there for me so completely.
I move closer, and now I can see the kitchen lights spilling across the tile floor.
There’s another laugh now, the same woman. She says, “I don’t believe you.”
“Oh?” I hear Locke reply. “Why not?”
“Because it just doesn’t seem like something that a man like you would do.”
Something inside me stills. I know that voice.
No.
No…
I round the corner slowly, one hand still trailing against the wall for balance. At first, I only see Locke’s back. He’s leaning against the kitchen island in jeans and a white t-shirt, relaxed and holding a beer. Then I step slightly to the left, and the woman opposite him comes into view.
Willow is sitting at the island with a glass of red wine in her hand. Her coat is draped over the back of a stool, her hair falls loose and lovely around her shoulders. She’s glowing with health, so bright and calm, and I stare at her, mesmerized by her beauty.
For one ridiculous second, I think perhaps she’s come to check on me. That she’s asking Locke how I am, maybe that she’s here to do some kind of energy work or breath work with me – but then she smiles at him.
Not the open smile she gave Dad, not the kind one she gave me, not the teasing one she gave Mayhem. This smile is slow. Heated. Unmistakable.
“You’ve got great self-control,” she says. “It makes you a very difficult man to read.”
Locke leans one hand against the counter, moving slightly closer to her, and says, “Most people don’t try”
“I like difficult things.” Her gaze moves over him. Lingering on his lips, his arms, his chest. “I like a challenge.”
Locke opens his mouth to answer. But before he can…
…she reaches across the island and lets her fingertips rest lightly against his wrist. Her blouse gapes open as she leans forward, and I can see a flash of her bare breasts, the n*****s pushing against the sheer

Everything inside me goes completely still. I don’t think. I don’t breathe. I don’t even feel sick anymore. I just stare.
I stare because, while I stand unseen in the shadows, dizzy and weak and shocked, my wonderful new sister openly flirts with the man I’m living with..
Some tiny sound escapes me now. I don’t know whether it’s his name, or simply my breath catching, but it seems to echo through the whole penthouse.
Locke spins around, and his eyes find mine instantly.
“Zara -”
The world disappears beneath my feet, and the last thing I see is the color draining from his face as he lunges towards me, his arms reaching out to me.
Then everything goes black.
