Chapter 85-1

Beside me, I hear Locke draw in a sharp, dangerous breath through his teeth, the sound cutting through the thick, suffocating tension of the office.

“Enough, Willow!” Dad barks.

“No.” She turns on him like a cornered animal. “You brought me here demanding absolute honesty. You said you wanted this cleared up once and for at Well, here’s your goddamn honesty!”

Her chest is heaving, her pale face flushed red with a sudden, overwhelming torrent of raw emotion. This has all clearly been festering beneath her sweet, innocent facade.

“You have money and protection,” Willow tells me. “You live in a luxurious penthouse. You have a family that has spent your entire life knowing exactly where you were, making sure you were cherished.”

“You don’t know everything about my life, Willow,” I say tersely. “You think it was some smooth, perfect fairy tale?”

“I know enough.”

“No, you really don’t.”

“I know you were loved,” she says, her hands clenched into white-knuckled fists at her sides. “You were wanted. You were built an entire empire to keep you safe from the cold.”

“Wait,” I say. “You mean that you weren’t?”

Willow stands there, trembling, her chin quivering as the fiery outrage slowly drains out of her, leaving behind only the bleak, hollow core of a girl who spent her entire life waiting for a love, a rescue that never

came.

“My mother tolerated me when I was quiet and easy to manage,” she whispers, her voice breaking into tiny, jagged pieces. “The second I showed any intuition about the universe, she shut me down.”

“Wait,” I say again, puzzled now. “I thought that you and your mother had a good relationship… at least, that’s the impression I got after the Chinese food dinner.”

“Huh,” Willow huffs. “Why do you think I started traveling and never came back?”

“You were learning,” I say. “From people in real situations, not in classrooms. Right?”

“Yes,” she allowed. “But the truth is that if I’d felt even slightly welcome in my own home, I’d have been there. Instead, I went out into the world looking for a place where I was wanted.”

“Oh,” I whisper. “Oh, I see.”

“And you have the audacity to pretend you understand me?” Willow spits, her anger rising again. “What – just because your rich husband turned out to be a cheating asshole?”

My breath catches sharply in my throat, the cruel blow landing with terrifying, precise lethality.

Dad lets out a dangerous, guttural growl, his massive frame tensing as he takes a half-step forward. ”

Willow, that’s far enough -”

She completely ignores him, stepping even closer to me, her eyes burning with a lifetime of festering jealousy and deep, bitter betrayal.

“You had a terrible marriage, Zara, and what happened when it blew up? Did you end up on the street? Did you have to figure out how to feed yourself while the world ground you into dust? No… you ran right back home to daddy. You came back, and everyone was still standing here waiting to catch you. You had an entire motorcycle club of men ready to wage war on your ex-husband just to fix your mistakes.”

I stand frozen, unable to speak, the blood roaring in my ears. The weight of her words hits me like a physical blow, stripping away every defense that I thought I’d built.

“You got sick,” she continues, her voice dripping with venom. “And what happened? An entire criminal syndicate gathered around you, led by your father and brother. Locke spent every night sitting in a chair watching you sleep. You fall down, and three men instantly jump to catch you.”

Her voice cracks on a jagged sob, her chest heaving as she lays bare the raw wound of her entire existence. The delicate, ethereal mask she’s worn since the day she arrived is completely gone, shattered into a million sharp pieces.
