Chapter 108-1
Claim
The hangover has finally retreated from an acute medical emergency down to a dull, manageable throb at the base of my skull.
It took four massive bottles of water, two plates of greasy bacon, a large Big Mac order, and four straight hours of mindless reality television, but my soul has officially re-entered my body.
Jade went down to the guest room an hour ago to finally shower and sleep. I retreated to the master bedroom, propped three heavy pillows against the dark headboard. I have a technical manual on fuel-injection systems resting open on my lap, but I’ve been staring at the exact same diagram of a throttle body for twenty minutes without processing a single word.
When the heavy door creaks open, I look up.
Locke steps into the room. His leather cut is slung over his arm, his black t-shirt clings to his muscled chest, and his sharp jaw is shadowed with a fresh layer of dark stubble.
‘Look at you, Zara,” Locke murmurs, his voice a low, rough rumble as he sets his cut over the back of a chair. “Vertical. Conscious. Wearing actual clothes.”
‘Barely,” I say. “I’m still reserving the right to die suddenly and dramatically, but I’m about eighty percent human again.”
Locke lets out a quiet laugh. He rolls his shoulders, cracking his neck, and walks around to my side of the bed. He sits on the edge of the heavy mattress, the springs dipping deep under his weight, and reaches out to drag his thumb across my jawline.
‘How was your day, baby?” he asks softly.
‘We ate greasy food and watched way too much reality TV.”
‘Really? How was the reality stuff?”
‘Educational. A woman with big hair threw an expensive wine glass into a swimming pool because someone insulted her teeth.” I stretch my legs under the duvet, leaning closer to his strength and heat. “How was it for you today?”
“Also educational,” he says. “Miller told us that a second delivery will be at the docks tomorrow night. Whoever drives will take it straight up to Knox’s main chemical lab on Route 9.”
“I bet it won’t be so easy to get your hands on this truck.”
“Nope,” Locke says. “Knox is going to move the truck as fast as possible, and he’s going to be on high-alert at the port for sure.”
“After losing the first shipment, Knox won’t just send a driver alone,” I say. “He’ll have armed escorts trailing that truck the entire way to the lab.”
“One hundred percent,” Locke says. “Rook is thinking armed chase cars front and back, and probably shooters riding right inside the cab with the driver. Straight off the dock, onto Highway 17, and up to Route
9.”

Chapter 103
Claim
Isit up higher against the headboard. “So how do you take it? Route 9 is a straight highway. If you attack Them at the port, It’s a giant gunfight in public. If you wait until they reach the lab, they’ll be inside a gated fortress.”
Locke nods, his eyes gleaming with quiet intensity as I lay out the problem.
“We don’t hit the port, and we don’t hit the lab, Locke says simply. “And we don’t fight those escort cars on an open highway.”
“Then where?”
“Highway 17 is the main road from the port to Route 9,” Locke says. “About halfway up, there’s a small two-lane road called Old County Road. It cuts right through a dense forest. It has no streetlights, high trees on both sides, and zero cell phone service.”
“A dead zone?”
“Rook says that it’s a complete dead zone. We’re going to force the whole convoy – the truck and the escort cars to turn onto that small road.”
“How do you force a paranoid driver and chase cars to take a detour?”
“Cobra is sending two of our younger prospects in an old, beat-up logging truck ten minutes ahead of time,” Locke says. “They’re going to fake an accident at the main highway junction. They’ll dump a load of heavy wooden logs right across the lanes. To the convoy driving up behind them, it will look like a messy, accidental crash blocking the main road.”
