Chapter 109-3
Then, absolute, deafening silence. Dead air.
Claim
No static. No shouting. No engine rumbles. No breathing. Just three black screens reflecting our terrified, frozen faces in the dark.
“Byte…” I whisper. My throat is so dry the word barely forms. “Byte, bring it back.”
“The jammer… something hit the relay,” Byte says, still typing furiously. “Or they cut the frequency. The whole bridge is dark.”
“Bring it back!” Jade screams. “Byte, bring them back! Who was hit?”
“I can’t,” Byte says, staring at the blank screens. “The loop is dead and I’ve got nothing. Zero signal.”
I stand up, but my knees are shaking so violently I have to grab the back of the sofa to keep from collapsing onto the floor. My heart isn’t just beating: it’s hammering against my ribs like a trapped bird, cold dread flooding through every vein in my body.
It hit my leg.
Stay with me, brother.
He’s bleeding too fast.
The words repeat in my head over and over, sharp and toxic. I can’t breathe. The air in the penthouse feels thick, heavy, impossible to drag into my lungs. Was it Mayhem? Was it Dad? Was it Locke?
Locke was standing right by the cab door. Locke was the one stepping up to take the wheel.
“Locke,” I whisper to the dark screens, my hand gripping the upholstery until my knuckles turn white. “Please. Please, Locke.”
Jade is hyperventilating beside me, her hands pressed over her mouth, her body trembling with violent, uncontrollable sobs. I reach out blindly, grabbing her cold hand, squeezing it with everything I have left. She clutches my fingers back, her grip bone-crushing, desperate.
Minutes bleed by in terrifying slow motion.
One minute.
Two minutes.
Five minutes.
The penthouse is a tomb. Nobody moves, nobody speaks. Byte sits frozen, staring at his useless, black monitors, his hands resting motionless on his lap. Jade and I stand locked together in the center of the room, holding hands so tight our fingers are completely numb, our eyes fixed on the blank glass screens.
Ten minutes pass.
Then fifteen.

Chapter 109
Then twenty.
Nothing. No signal, no update. Just the quiet hum of the fridge and the terrifying, dark unknown miles away in the woods.
Clam
Jade’s breathing is shallow, ragged, her cold fingers clinging to mine like a lifeline. I pull her closer against my side, wrapping my arm around her shoulders, but I have no comfort to give her. My own heart is slamming against my ribs like a trapped bird, my throat so tight I can barely swallow.
It hit my leg.
He’s bleeding too fast.
Stay with me, brother.
The raw, frantic shouts loop endlessly in my head, sharp and toxic cutting deeper with every silent second that ticks by on the penthouse clock.
I stare into the dark, reflective glass of the dead monitors, watching the faint silhouettes of the two of us holding onto each other in the dark. We sit in the heavy silence, holding our breath.
And we wait.
